I thought my parents had lost their minds when they arrived at my dorm in ripped clothes with garbage bags. Then my dad told me who they were really watching.
“Dad… what are you wearing?”
He looked down at himself like nothing was wrong.
“Clothes.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Act like this is normal.”
My dad was standing in the middle of my college parking lot wearing ripped jeans, a faded T-shirt with a dark stain near the hem, and an old brown jacket I hadn’t seen him wear in years.
My mom looked even worse.
Her hair was messy. Her sweatshirt had holes near the cuffs.
Dirt was smudged across one side of her face.
And half my belongings were packed in black garbage bags. Actual garbage bags.
I stared at both of them. “Did something happen?”
Mom shrugged. “Long morning.”
That made no sense.
Then I looked past them. “Where’s Dad’s truck?”
My uncle’s ancient blue minivan was parked behind them.
The thing had a dent in the side and one missing hubcap.
Dad glanced at it. “This one still runs.”
“Why are we using Uncle Mike’s van?”
“More room.”
“You own a truck.”
“Also true.”
I narrowed my eyes.

Before I could press harder, a brand-new white SUV pulled into the space beside us.

We’d been talking online for almost two months before move-in.

Mom helped another girl’s grandmother carry a box.
They offered Chloe’s parents bottled water.
Dad volunteered to help move a shelf.

They just looked like they’d spent the previous night under an overpass.
Every time I looked at Chloe, she seemed quieter.
Then two other girls from our floor came into the room.

A few minutes later, I heard her whisper, “I didn’t know.”
The girls glanced in my direction.
I frowned. “Didn’t know what?”
Then Chloe’s mother asked my mom. “So, what do you do?”

“Oh,” Mom said, “a little bit of everything.”

I looked at Dad.
He was focused very hard on assembling a shelf. Too hard.
I grabbed Mom’s sleeve. “Can you come into the hallway?”
Dad immediately stood. “I’ll come too.”
“No. Actually, yes. Both of you.”
The second the door shut behind us, I whispered, “What is wrong with you?”
Mom blinked. “What?”
“This.”
I pointed between them.
“The clothes. The van. The bags. The weird answers.”
Dad said nothing.
“Are you trying to embarrass me?”
“No.”
“Then what are you doing?”
My parents looked at each other.
That look made me even angrier. “See? That. You’ve been doing that all morning.”
Dad lowered his voice. “We did it on purpose.”
I stared at him. “What?”
“The clothes. The van. All of it.”
I blinked. Mom nodded.
I actually laughed because I couldn’t process what I was hearing.
“You deliberately dressed like this?”
“Yes.”
“You deliberately packed my stuff in trash bags?”
Mom lifted a finger. “That part was my idea.”
I stared at her. “Why?”
Dad glanced toward the dorm room door.
Then he said, “Because I wanted to see how your roommate treated you.”
I froze. “What?”
He leaned back against the wall. “Just listen before you get mad.”
“I’m already mad.”
“Fair.”
“Why would you test Chloe? You don’t know her.”
“No.”
“Then this is insane.”
“Possibly.”
That answer slowed me down.
Dad wasn’t acting smug.
He looked serious. “I noticed some things before today.”
“What things?”
He hesitated.
Then said, “Questions.”
“What questions?”
Mom answered. “About us.”
I frowned. “Everyone asks about people’s parents.”
“I know,” Dad said. “But hers kept circling back to money.”
My stomach tightened. I didn’t say anything.
Dad continued. “You mentioned she asked whether your car was yours.”
I remembered. “And whether we bought it for you.”
I looked away.
Mom said, “She asked about the house in your vacation photos.”
“It’s Uncle Mike’s place.”
“Right.”
Dad nodded. “And after you told her that, she asked if our family owned other property.”
I remembered that too. At the time, I’d laughed.
Chloe had a curious personality.
At least, that was how I’d interpreted it.
Dad continued. “She asked what I did.”
“So?”
“Then she looked up the business.”
My head snapped toward him. “What?”
“You told me she knew the store name.”
I had. I’d forgotten.
Mom added, “Then she asked whether your tuition was covered.”
I crossed my arms. “She wasn’t demanding my bank statements.”
“No,” Dad said. “And I didn’t say she was a bad person.”
“Then why do all this?”
He looked toward my room. “Because every time we brought it up, you said we were imagining things.”
I was getting more irritated. “So instead of talking to me, you decided to run some weird social experiment?”
“We did talk to you.”
“And I disagreed.”
“Exactly.”
I stared at him.
Dad sighed.
“Emma, when someone tells you what they think about a person, it’s easy to dismiss it. I wanted you to watch for yourself.”
That still felt manipulative.
“Why do you care this much?”
His face changed. Mom looked at him.
Then Dad said, “Because I had a friend like that once.”
I stopped. “When?”
“College.”
He rubbed his jaw. “His name was Darren.”
I’d heard the name once or twice. Dad rarely talked about him.
“We were roommates sophomore year. Best friends, I thought.”
He looked down the hallway.
“My dad had just sold part of his business. Darren found out my family had money.”
“What happened?”
“Nothing dramatic at first.”
Dad gave a humorless laugh.
“That’s why I didn’t notice.”
Darren started asking Dad to cover dinner.
Then rent. Then trips. Then loans. Then money for a business idea.
Every request was framed as something friends did for each other.
“How much did you give him?”
Dad didn’t answer.
Mom did. “Almost $20,000.”
My eyes widened.
“What?”
“And this was decades ago,” she added.
I stared at Dad. “What happened?”
“He disappeared after graduation owing me most of it.”
“He never paid you back?”
“No.”
Dad’s face tightened.
“I later found out he’d told people I was useful because my family had money.”
That shut me up.
Dad looked toward my room.
“So when you kept mentioning a roommate asking what we owned, I noticed.”
I exhaled. “Chloe is not Darren.”
“I know.”
“You’ve known her for ten minutes.”
“I know.”
“Then this is unfair.”
“Maybe.”
That surprised me.
Dad shrugged. “I’m not asking you to hate her.”
“Then what are you asking?”
“Pay attention.”
That was it.
Not “dump her.”
Not “I told you so.”
Just pay attention.
Mom said quietly, “People sometimes reveal themselves when they think there’s nothing to gain from impressing someone.”
I looked through the small window in the dorm door.
Chloe was talking to two girls.
All three glanced toward the hallway.
Then quickly looked away.
My stomach tightened. “Did anything happen while I was getting my key?”
Mom hesitated. “She asked whether you were on financial aid.”
I stared at her. “She asked you that?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“That your finances were your business.”
“And then?”
“She asked if you had enough money for the meal plan.”
I closed my eyes.
Dad added, “Her dad mentioned there were campus jobs if you needed extra money.”
I looked at him. “Maybe he was trying to help.”
“He probably was.”
I frowned. “You’re defending him now?”
“I’m trying not to become the thing I’m warning you about.”
That shut me up again.
We went back inside.
And now I was watching.
Really watching.
Chloe asked whether I’d brought a mini fridge.
I said no.
She glanced at hers.
“Maybe we should each keep our own food separate.”
I stared at her.

“What about them?”

“Nothing.”

She sat down. “I just thought…”
“What?”
“From your pictures, I thought your family was kind of…”
She stopped.
“Kind of what?”
“Well-off.”
There it was.
“Why does that matter?”
“It doesn’t.”
“Then why have you acted weird all day?”
Her face tightened. “I haven’t.”
“You have.”
She crossed her arms. “So have you.”
“My parents showed up looking like extras from a disaster movie. I have a reason.”
She almost smiled.
Then she said, “I just don’t like feeling misled.”
That made me laugh. “Who misled you?”
“You made it sound like that car was yours.”
“It is.”
She blinked. “What?”
“The car in my pictures. It’s mine.”
Her expression changed. “And my parents aren’t poor.”

“My dad owns three businesses. My mom is an accountant.”

“Seriously.”
“And the van?”
“My uncle’s.”
“The garbage bags?”

“Oh my God,” she said. “You scared me.”
I went still. “Why?”

“My brother had a roommate who couldn’t afford anything. My brother always felt guilty. Restaurants, trips, stuff like that.”
“So the second you thought my parents didn’t have money, you decided I’d become a burden?”
“No.”
“Then why did our shared fridge suddenly become your fridge?”
Her face went red. “That’s not fair.”
“It’s exactly what happened.”
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
For the first time, Chloe looked genuinely ashamed.
“Okay.”
I wasn’t expecting that.
“Okay what?”
“You’re right.”
I stared at her.
“I was being awful.”
My anger lost some momentum.
Not all. But some.
She looked down. “My mom has always warned us about people taking advantage.”
I looked around our completely ordinary dorm room.
“Are you secretly a billionaire?”
That made her laugh despite herself.
“No.”
“Then maybe relax.”
“I know.”
She sighed.
“My parents have money. Enough that Mom gets weird about it.”
That sounded painfully familiar. My dad feared people pretending to like me because we had money.
Chloe’s family feared people with less money would become a burden.
Apparently both families had sent daughters to college expecting financial predators.

Then I said, “For the record, my parents did this on purpose.”
Her eyes widened. “What?”
I told her. Not every detail.
Just that Dad had noticed her questions and wanted me to see how people treated us if they thought we didn’t have money.
Chloe stared at me. “Your dad tested me?”
“Basically.”
“That’s insane.”
“I told him the same thing.”
“That’s manipulative.”
“Also said that.”
She stood up, clearly irritated.
Then stopped. “Although…”
I raised an eyebrow.
She sat back down. “I failed pretty badly.”
“Spectacularly.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
The first week was awkward.
But Chloe surprised me.
She apologized to my parents.
Actually apologized.
She called my mom and said:
“I made assumptions based on how you looked, and then I treated Emma differently. I’m embarrassed by that.”
Mom accepted.
Dad said, “Embarrassment is useful if you don’t waste it.”
I told him that sounded like something printed on a mug.

She stopped asking what things cost. If someone on our floor couldn’t afford a restaurant, she didn’t make it weird.

The first time Dad visited, he wore a clean polo and drove his normal truck.

My parents were invited.
