Not gradually.
Completely.
I had called his family. I had gone to their house. I had even left messages with people who knew him.
Nothing.
Eventually, I stopped looking.
Now he stood on my porch holding a small blue-wrapped box.
“You need to leave,” I whispered.
Daniel swallowed.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to disappear for thirteen years and show up on my daughter’s eighteenth birthday.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to bring photographs of her.”
“I didn’t take that photograph.”
That stopped me.
“What?”
Daniel looked past me toward the living room.
Clara was standing there now.
Her face had gone pale.
“Clara,” he said softly.
She stared at him.
“Who are you?”
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at her.
“My name is Daniel Reed.”
Clara frowned.
“I know that name.”
“You should.”
He slowly lifted the small box.
“Your brother talked about you every day.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“How?”
Daniel took a breath.
“Because I was there.”
The room seemed to become completely still.
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel nodded.
“I will.”
He looked down at the box.
“But not here.”
I didn’t trust him.
I didn’t even know if I believed what I was seeing.
But something in his expression wasn’t the expression of a man who had come to cause harm.
It was the expression of someone who had been carrying something heavy for a very long time.
I opened the door again.
“Come inside.”
Daniel entered.
Clara hadn’t moved.
Maya and Sophie were standing beside her, confused and frightened.
I introduced him.
“This is Daniel. He was Ethan’s best friend.”

“You knew my brother?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“I knew him better than almost anyone.”

“Mom?”

He placed the blue-wrapped box on the table.
“I promised Ethan something.”

“What did he ask you to promise?”
Daniel looked at her.
“That if something happened to him, I would watch over you.”

“He knew?”

“So he asked you to watch me?”
“Yes.”
“From where?”

“You’ve been watching her?”

He pointed toward the photograph.
“I didn’t take that picture.”
“Then who did?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“I don’t know.”
That answer frightened me more than anything else.
He opened the box.
Inside was a stack of envelopes.
All of them were yellow with age.

On the top envelope, written in handwriting I knew better than my own, were five words:

Clara reached for it.

“Mom?”
I nodded.

I wish I could have been there to annoy you about it.”
Clara laughed through her tears.

“I don’t know what you’ll remember about me.
Maybe Mom will tell you I was stubborn.
She’s right.
Maybe she’ll tell you I stole cookies.
Also true.
But there is something I need you to know.
You were never the reason I was afraid.
You were the reason I wasn’t.”
Clara stopped reading.
She pressed the paper against her chest.
I turned away.
I couldn’t watch her cry.
Daniel quietly said, “There’s more.”
Clara continued.
“I know everyone keeps telling Mom that the operation will be safe.
I believe them.
But if something goes wrong, I don’t want you growing up thinking you took me away from her.
You didn’t.
You gave me something to fight for.
You were five years old.
You didn’t ask for any of this.
So if you’re ever angry at me, be angry.
If you miss me, miss me.
But don’t ever apologize for surviving.”
Clara broke down.
I went to her and held her.
For several moments, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered,
“Why didn’t you give me this before?”
Daniel looked at me.
“I tried.”
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
“I brought the letters to your house.”
“When?”
“Two weeks after Ethan died.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“I left them with your neighbor.”
“My neighbor?”
“Mrs. Bell.”
My heart stopped.
Mrs. Bell had lived next door for years.
“She never gave me anything.”
Daniel reached into his coat.
“I thought she had.”
He pulled out an old receipt.
“Then, years later, I found out she had moved away. Her daughter was clearing out her house and contacted me.”
I stared at the receipt.
There was a date.
Three weeks after Ethan’s funeral.
Then Daniel said something that made the room go cold.
“She also gave me something else.”
“What?”
“A note.”
He unfolded a piece of paper.
The handwriting wasn’t Ethan’s.
It belonged to someone else.
The message was short.
Don’t give Margaret the letters. Ethan’s death wasn’t as simple as she thinks.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’ve had this for thirteen years?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was scared.”
“Of what?”
Daniel looked toward Clara.

Silence filled the room.
Clara slowly stood.
“You said the surgery went wrong.”
“It did.”
“But you think something else happened?”
Daniel nodded.

I stopped.
Daniel looked down.
Clara asked,
“Dad knew?”
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
I continued.
Yesterday, Dad came to see me. He asked me questions about Clara’s condition. He asked how much the doctors knew and whether there were other options. He seemed angry when I told him there weren’t.
My heart began pounding.
Then he said something strange. He told me I should think carefully before I become a donor.
I looked up.
Daniel’s face was pale.
“What?”
He nodded slowly.
“Keep reading.”
I did.
I asked him why. He wouldn’t explain. He just said, ‘Some things are better left alone.’
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Then came the sentence that made everything inside me stop.
Mom, I don’t know what he means. But I don’t think he wants me to go through with this.
Clara covered her mouth.
I read the next paragraph.
I’m telling you because if anything happens to me, I don’t want you thinking I was confused or pressured. I made my choice because Clara is my sister. Nobody forced me. Nobody manipulated me. I want you to know that.
Tears blurred the page.
Then:
But I also want you to know that Dad frightened me today.
I couldn’t read for several seconds.
Then I forced myself onward.
If I don’t make it through, please don’t spend your life looking for someone to blame. Please raise Clara. Tell her I loved her. And if you ever meet Daniel again, tell him I kept my promise.
The letter ended there.
I stared at the final sentence.
“What promise?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“He promised me something the night before the surgery.”
“What?”
“That he wouldn’t let you see him scared.”
I looked at him.
Daniel’s eyes were wet.
“He was terrified, Margaret.”
That sentence broke something inside me.
For thirteen years, I had imagined Ethan walking into that hospital room without fear.

She didn’t move.

“You look just like him.”
Clara’s voice was quiet.
“Like Ethan?”
David nodded.
“Especially the eyes.”
Clara folded her arms.
“Why did you leave?”
David closed his eyes.
“I was ashamed.”
“Of what?”
“Of being afraid.”

“You left us.”
“I know.”

“You knew your son was going into surgery.”
“I know.”
His voice broke.
“I knew.”

“I knew because I was the one who had arranged for the transplant evaluation.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
David explained.
Before Ethan was tested, he had contacted the hospital because Clara’s condition was worsening.
He had hoped that a donor could be found.
When Ethan volunteered, David panicked.
“He was eighteen,” David said. “I kept thinking there had to be another way.”
“Then why didn’t you come?”
“Because I was afraid I would tell him not to do it.”
“And?”
“I almost did.”
David looked at Clara.
“But Ethan told me something.”
“What?”
“He said, ‘Dad, if Clara dies because I’m too afraid to help her, I’ll never forgive myself.’”
Clara began crying.
David continued.
“So I left.”
“You abandoned him.”
“Yes.”
His voice was barely audible.
“I thought if I wasn’t there, I couldn’t influence his decision.”
I didn’t forgive him.

David shook his head.
“No.”

Clara looked at me.

I took her hand.
