I thought I was finally getting the family I’d waited years to find. Then, moments before I married Connor, his daughter brought me something that made every late-night excuse and uneasy glance mean something else. By the time I understood why, I couldn’t go through with the wedding.
Lily reached the end of the aisle with tears in her eyes and our ring box pressed against her white dress.
Connor smiled at his eight-year-old daughter and bent toward her.
“Hey, bug. Are you okay?”
She looked at him, then at me.

I turned.

Connor closed his eyes.
