I knew ten days with my mother-in-law would test my patience. I didn’t expect to come home on day five and find our bedroom door leaning against the hallway wall. Grace said her son had nothing to hide from her. Harold barely reacted. He simply took my hand and told me to wait until she went to bed.
There are several things you expect to find missing when you come home from work.
An Amazon package.
The leftovers you were saving.
One sock.
Your bedroom door is not generally on the list.
There are several things you expect to find missing when you come home from work.
I stopped halfway down the hallway.
The doorway was completely empty.
Our door leaned against the opposite wall. The hinges, screws, and doorknob were arranged neatly on the carpet.
Grace had even put the screws in a little row.
The doorway was completely empty.
Apparently, boundary violations could be extremely organized.
My mother-in-law stood inside our bedroom folding Harold’s shirts.
“What did you do?” I asked.
She didn’t turn around.
“You two keep closing yourselves in here like teenagers. It’s ridiculous.”
“What did you do?”
“You took our door off?”
Now she looked at me.
“My son has nothing to hide from me.”
For several seconds, I genuinely couldn’t think of a response.
“This is my bedroom too.”
“And this is my son’s house.”
“You took our door off?”
Actually, Harold and I had bought the house together.
Both names were on the mortgage.
Both names were on the deed.
And both names received junk mail addressed to people who had apparently lived there in 2004.
Both names were on the deed.
But arguing property records with a woman who had just removed a bedroom door felt like starting three miles behind the actual problem.
Grace had been staying with us because a pipe burst in her apartment.
Ten days.
That was the estimate.
Grace had been staying with us because a pipe burst in her apartment.
On day one, I’d been sympathetic.
By day two, I was checking the calendar.
Grace didn’t knock.
The first time she walked into our bedroom, I was changing clothes.
“Oh!”
She didn’t leave.
Grace didn’t knock.
She walked to Harold’s nightstand.
“I need a charger.”
“Grace, I’m changing.”
“I’ve seen underwear before.”
“Mine?”
That finally got her to turn around.
“Grace, I’m changing.”
Another afternoon, she opened Harold’s desk drawers looking for stamps.
I found her holding a stack of old receipts.
“The stamps aren’t in there,” I said.
“Well, where does he keep them?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, where does he keep them?”
She gave me a look suggesting my marriage might not survive such ignorance.
Then came the birth control.
I’d left it beside my lamp.
Grace picked it up.
Actually picked it up.
“Oh, don’t look so horrified,” she said. “I’ve known my son longer than you have.”
Then came the birth control.
I took it from her.
“That doesn’t make this yours.”
Harold spoke to her that evening.
“Mom, our bedroom is private.”
Grace rolled her eyes.
“Private from strangers, maybe. I’m your mother.”
“Mom, our bedroom is private.”
He told her again the next morning after she walked in looking for a sweater Harold hadn’t owned since college.
“Knock before you come in, Mom.”
“I gave birth to you.”
“Thirty-eight years ago. You can knock now.”
“I gave birth to you.”
I thought that might finally settle it.
Instead, two days later, she removed the entire door.
Grace placed another folded shirt on the bed.
“Honestly, Tina, what are you two hiding in here?”
“My pants, occasionally,” I said.
“What are you two hiding in here?”
She ignored that.
“A family shouldn’t need all these barriers.”
The front door opened downstairs.
“Thank God,” I muttered.
Harold appeared at the end of the hallway, loosening his tie.
He saw me.
Then the empty doorway.
“A family shouldn’t need all these barriers.”
Then the door against the wall.
Then his mother.
“Mom.”
Grace smiled.
“Much better, isn’t it?”
Harold looked at the hardware on the carpet.
“A family shouldn’t need all these barriers,” she repeated.
“Much better, isn’t it?”
I waited for him to explode.
I was prepared to help.
Instead, he picked up one of the screws.
Then he looked at Grace.
“Did you use my drill?”
“The little one.”
“Of course.”
I waited for him to explode.
He put the screw down.
Then he took my hand.
“Come downstairs.”
I stared at him.
“Harold.”
“Come on.”
Grace went back to folding shirts as if we’d interrupted her.
“Come downstairs.”
I followed Harold into the kitchen.
The moment we were out of earshot, I pulled my hand free.
“If you’re about to tell me she’s only here for five more days, I’m going to need you to reconsider your strategy.”
“I’m not,” he said.
“Good.”
“I’m going to need you to reconsider your strategy.”
“I’ll handle it.”
“You handled it twice.”
He leaned against the counter.
“I know.”
“And now our bedroom doesn’t have a door.”
“I noticed.”
“You handled it twice.”
“I’m considerably past panic, Harold.”
That almost made him smile.
Then he lowered his voice.
“I’ll teach her a lesson.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“What are you going to do?”
“Nothing yet.”
“I’ll teach her a lesson.”
That strange little smile finally appeared.
“Wait until she goes to bed.”
I hated that answer.
I also wanted to know what it meant.
Dinner was awkward.
Grace wasn’t.
“Wait until she goes to bed.”
She ate roast chicken and discussed her apartment repairs as though she hadn’t spent the afternoon dismantling part of our house.
Harold didn’t mention the door.
Neither did I.
That made her cheerful.
Harold didn’t mention the door.
She apparently interpreted silence as surrender.
Around nine-thirty, she stood and yawned.
“I’m exhausted.”
“I’m sure,” I muttered. “Removing hardware took effort.”
Harold kicked my ankle gently beneath the table.
“I’m exhausted.”
Grace headed upstairs.
A minute later, I heard her guest-room door close.
Then came a small, unmistakable sound.
Click.
I looked at Harold.
He kept eating.
“Did she just lock her door?”
“Yep.”
Grace headed upstairs.
I waited.
He took another bite of potatoes.
“Are we not going to discuss the obvious?”
“Not yet.”
At ten-thirty, Harold rinsed his plate.
At eleven, he went upstairs.
“Are we not going to discuss the obvious?”
Then came back down wearing his bathrobe.
I stared at him.
“Why are you dressed like you’re checking into a spa?”
“I don’t want to wrinkle another shirt.”
“That explains absolutely nothing, Harold.”
“Stay here.”
“I don’t want to wrinkle another shirt.”
He disappeared upstairs.
I heard very little.
A faint metallic sound.
A door moving.
Then footsteps.
Several minutes passed.
I considered following him.
He disappeared upstairs.
Before I could, Grace screamed.
“HAROLD!”
I ran.
Grace stood in the hallway in a floral robe and slippers, scarlet from her neck to her hairline.
Harold stood opposite her.
Perfectly calm.
Harold stood opposite her.
His right hand was behind his back.
“What did you do?” I asked.
Grace pointed at him.
“Tell him to put it back!”
“Put what back?”
Harold brought his hand forward.
I covered my mouth.
“Tell him to put it back!”
He was holding Grace’s guest-room doorknob.
“Harold!” Grace breathed.
“What?”
“PUT THAT BACK!”
“Why?”
“Because that’s my room!”
“PUT THAT BACK!”
Harold glanced toward our bedroom.
The one without a door.
Then back at her.
“In my house?”
Grace flinched.
“I need privacy!”
Harold waited half a second.
“From family?”
“I need privacy!”
I had to turn away.
Not because I was horrified.
Because laughing would have ruined it.
“That is completely different!”
“How, Mom?”
“I’m a guest!”
“And Tina lives here.”
“That is completely different!”
Grace pointed at the doorknob.
“You had no right to touch my door while I was sleeping.”
Harold nodded.
“So you understand the concept.”
“I am your mother.”
“Yes.”
“And mothers deserve respect.”
“So do wives.”
“I am your mother.”
Grace looked at me as though I’d somehow orchestrated the entire thing from downstairs.
I raised both hands.
“I was eating pudding.”
“Harold, put my doorknob back,” she demanded.
“I will.”
“When?”
“Harold, put my doorknob back.”
“When ours is back.”
She stared at him.
“You expect me to rehang that door?”
“You got it down, Mom.”
“At eleven o’clock at night?”
“Tomorrow is fine.”
Grace looked toward her guest room.
“Until then?”
“You expect me to rehang that door?”
Harold shrugged.
“A family shouldn’t need all these barriers.”
I chortled.
I couldn’t help it.
Grace glared at me.
“This isn’t funny.”
“No,” I said.
Then I looked at the knob in Harold’s hand.
“Maybe a little.”
“This isn’t funny.”
Grace stormed into the guest room and pushed the door closed.
It didn’t latch the way she wanted.
She opened it again.
“Harold!”
“Tomorrow, Mom.”
He walked toward our room.
I followed him.
“Tomorrow, Mom.”
There was nowhere to close ourselves in, obviously.
We got ready for bed in full view of the hallway.
Harold hung his robe on a chair.
“Are you mad?”
“At you?” I asked.
He nodded.
“Less than I was at five.”
“Are you mad?”
“That’s progress.”
“But we’re not done.”
Harold sat on the edge of the bed.
“I know.”
“You told her twice. And then I was still the one having to explain why I didn’t want your mother walking in while I was changing.”
“But we’re not done.”
“I thought she’d stop.”
“Why?”
He considered that.
“I don’t know.”
That answer was at least honest.
“Your mother thinks if a boundary hurts her feelings, the boundary is rude.”
“I thought she’d stop.”
He looked toward the hall.
“And I’ve been trying not to hurt her feelings.”
“Exactly.”
He nodded once.
We were both too tired for a marriage seminar in a doorless bedroom.
“I’ve been trying not to hurt her feelings.”
The next morning, I woke to voices downstairs.
Grace was already in the kitchen when I arrived.
She looked terrible.
Harold sat across from her eating toast.
Grace’s doorknob rested beside his coffee mug.
She looked terrible.
She pointed at it.
“I barely slept.”
Harold buttered his toast.
“Why?”
“Because anyone could have walked in!”
“Did anyone?”
“That isn’t the point!”
“I barely slept.”
Harold took a bite.
“Exactly.”
Grace looked at me.
“Tell him.”
“Tell him what?”
“That what he did was inappropriate.”
“Tell him what?”
I poured coffee.
“You mean removing your privacy without permission?”
She stopped.
“That’s different.”
“Privacy isn’t an accusation, Grace,” I said.
“I never accused you of anything.”
“Privacy isn’t an accusation, Grace.”
“You keep saying we shouldn’t need a closed door unless we’re hiding something.”
“Well…”
I raised my hand.
“A closed door doesn’t mean we’re hiding something from you. Sometimes it means I’m changing my pants.”
“A closed door doesn’t mean we’re hiding something from you.”
Harold coughed into his hand.
Grace ignored him.
“I would never deliberately embarrass you.”
“You walked in while I was changing.”
“You could’ve said something.”
“I did.”
Silence.
“You walked in while I was changing.”
Harold put his toast down.
“Stop making her explain it, Mom.”
Grace looked at him.
“I am trying to understand.”
“No, you’re trying to get Tina to give you an answer you like.”
“I am trying to understand.”
That one surprised all three of us.
Grace recovered first.
“I am your mother, Harold. I shouldn’t be treated like some stranger in my son’s house.”
“Our house.”
“That’s what I meant.”
“I shouldn’t be treated like some stranger in my son’s house.”
“No, Mom. It isn’t.”
Grace stared at him.
Harold nodded toward me.
“Tina isn’t staying with me. We live here together.”
Nobody spoke for a moment.
“We live here together.”
Then Grace pushed her chair back.
“So what, exactly, are you saying?”
Harold answered without looking at me first.
“You can stay until your apartment is ready.”
Grace waited.
“You can stay until your apartment is ready.”
“But you knock. You stay out of our drawers. You don’t touch Tina’s things. And our bedroom door goes back today.”
Grace folded her arms.
“And if I don’t agree?”
“We’ll help you find a hotel.”
Her eyebrows went up.
“You’d send your own mother to a hotel?”
“And if I don’t agree?”
“I’d rather you stay here.” His voice stayed calm. “But only if you respect the people who live here.”
Grace looked at the doorknob.
Then at the hallway.
Then at me.
For the first time since she’d arrived, she didn’t have an immediate answer.
She didn’t have an immediate answer.
About an hour later, I was loading the dishwasher when I heard metal clink upstairs.
I found Grace in the hallway.
She was holding Harold’s screwdriver.
The bedroom door was still leaning against the wall.
She was holding Harold’s screwdriver.
She looked at the neatly arranged screws she’d removed the day before.
Then at me.
“Where is Harold?”
“Garage.”
“Tell him I need help holding this.”
I leaned against the wall.
“Are you putting it back?”
“Tell him I need help holding this.”
Grace sighed.
“I suppose I went too far.”
“You took off my bedroom door.”
She looked at it.
“Yes.”
A few seconds passed.
Then she tried again.
“I went too far.”
“You did.”
“I suppose I went too far.”
Grace nodded.
It wasn’t an apology.
Not quite.
But it was the first sentence all week that didn’t require me to surrender something in return.
Harold came upstairs.
He looked at the screwdriver in his mother’s hand.
Then at me.
It wasn’t an apology.
I stepped aside.
Together, they lifted the bedroom door toward its hinges.
Grace reached for the first screw.
Twenty minutes later, the door was hanging where it belonged.
Harold opened and closed it twice.
Grace watched.
“Satisfied?”
“Very,” I said.
The door was hanging where it belonged.
Harold handed her the guest-room doorknob.
Grace stared at it.
“You’re giving this back?”
“Of course.”
He walked with her to the guest room and put it back.
“You’re giving this back?”
That evening, I was sitting on our bed folding laundry when footsteps came down the hall.
I waited.
The handle didn’t move.
Knock. Knock.
Harold looked up from his book.
Neither of us answered automatically.
Grace knocked again.
I smiled.
“Come in.”
Grace knocked again.
The door opened halfway.
Grace stayed in the hallway.
“Do you have a phone charger?”
“Kitchen counter,” I said.
She nodded. “Right.”
Then she left.
Harold looked at me.
“Did that just happen?”
“Don’t scare it away.”
“Did that just happen?”
He laughed.
The next morning, Grace knocked before entering again.
She also asked Harold where the stamps were instead of opening his desk.
Apparently they had been in the kitchen junk drawer the entire time, which felt appropriate after everything we’d been through.
Grace knocked before entering again.
Grace never gave me a grand apology.
I didn’t need one.
She knocked.
And when she forgot once two days later, Harold stopped her before I had to say anything.
“Mom.”
Grace backed into the hallway.
Then knocked.
Grace never gave me a grand apology.
That mattered more to me than another conversation ever could.
On the final night of her stay, Harold and I went upstairs.
He closed our bedroom door.
Click.
I looked at it.
Harold checked the lock.
“Yep.”
He closed our bedroom door.
I changed into my pajamas.
No footsteps stopped me.
No handle turned.
No voice asked what we were hiding.
For the first time all week, I didn’t glance toward the hallway once.
No footsteps stopped me.
