I was holding our burning-hot two-year-old when I opened the garage and saw my SUV was gone. Trent rejected my call, then texted that he’d taken it to his friend’s for the weekend. When I told him Silas had a 103-degree fever and needed urgent care, he sent back a reply that changed what I did next.
Silas had one sock on when the pediatric nurse told me to bring him in.
The missing sock was under the couch, although I didn’t know that yet.
At that moment, I had a two-year-old burning against my shoulder, a half-zipped diaper bag, and a cup of apple juice he’d refused six times.
His temperature was 103.
I had a two-year-old burning against my shoulder.
The nurse wasn’t concerned about the number alone. It was the fact that Silas had become unusually sleepy and wouldn’t drink.
“Take him to the emergency room,” she said.
“On my way.”
I carried him toward the garage.
My SUV was gone.
“Take him to the emergency room.”
I actually looked behind me, as though it might be hiding in the laundry room.
Empty garage.
No SUV.
Trent’s car wasn’t there either because it had been at Miller’s repair shop since Wednesday.
Then I remembered Trent’s weekend.
Trent’s car wasn’t there either.
He’d been looking forward to spending Friday through Sunday at Dave’s house for a game and a fishing trip. Dave was supposed to pick him up.
I’d been happy for Trent.
Really.
Dave was supposed to pick him up.
We had a toddler. Breaks were rare. I believed we were pretty good about giving each other one when we could.
I called him.
Rejected.
I called again.
Rejected.
I believed we were pretty good about giving each other one when we could.
Then a text appeared.
“Took your SUV. Dave didn’t feel like driving out to get me, and we needed the trunk space for our extra gear anyway.”
I stared at it.
Then at Silas.
Then at the empty garage.
“We needed the trunk space for our extra gear anyway.”
I typed with one thumb.
“Trent, Silas has a 103 fever. The nurse says he needs to be seen. You are twenty minutes away. Bring the SUV back now.”
The typing bubbles appeared.
Trent, Silas has a 103 fever.
“I just sat down on the couch and the game is starting. I’m not driving back because you can’t handle a basic toddler cold. Give him Tylenol.”
I read it twice.
Silas whimpered and pushed his face into my neck.
“I’m not driving back because you can’t handle a basic toddler cold.”
“He won’t drink and he’s barely staying awake. I am completely stranded. How am I supposed to get him to the emergency room if he gets worse?”
This time Trent answered immediately.
“Stop trying to sabotage my weekend with your hysterical drama. You’re a mother. Figure it out. 🤷🏻♂️”
“How am I supposed to get him to the emergency room if he gets worse?”
I stood there long enough for the garage light to switch itself off.
Then I turned it back on.
Our spare toddler car seat was sitting beside a box of Christmas decorations.
I’d bought it for my sister to use whenever she watched Silas. Trent had once complained that we didn’t need two.
I’d bought it for my sister to use whenever she watched Silas.
That afternoon, it was the most useful thing in my house.
I didn’t text him again.
I ordered a rideshare to the emergency room.
The driver pulled up eleven minutes later and watched me wrestle the car seat into his back seat while Silas cried against my shoulder.
I didn’t text him again.
“You need a minute?” he asked.
“Probably six.”
He waited.
I got the seat secured, buckled Silas in, and climbed beside him.
Only when we pulled away did I realize I was still wearing slippers.
“You need a minute?”
At the emergency room, Silas threw up on my shirt.
After that, the slippers bothered me considerably less.
The doctor examined him, got some fluids into him, and told me his symptoms were consistent with a viral infection. We were given medication instructions, hydration targets, and a list of warning signs that meant we should bring him back.
At the emergency room, Silas threw up on my shirt.
By then, Silas had finally taken a few sips of juice.
I could have kissed that cup.
He fell asleep against me while I waited for another ride home.
For the previous three hours, I hadn’t had time to be angry.
I waited for another ride home.
I had temperatures to remember.
Questions to answer.
Medicine to collect.
A toddler who objected to anyone putting anything near his ears.
Once he was asleep in my arms, I finally looked at my phone.
I had temperatures to remember.
Nothing from Trent.
No “How is he?”
No “What did the doctor say?”
Nothing.
I opened our shared email because I needed the receipt from the pharmacy.
Nothing from Trent.
A different message caught my eye.
MILLER’S AUTO SERVICE: VEHICLE READY FOR PICKUP.
Sent at 3:18 that afternoon.
Their automated footer listed weekend pickup hours through Sunday afternoon.
I stared at it.
A different message caught my eye.
Trent’s car was ready.
My first instinct was embarrassingly automatic.
I started calculating.
If I got my sister to sit with Silas, I could collect Trent’s car before Miller’s closed. Then Trent could bring my SUV home Sunday and I’d follow him back to the shop so he could get his.
Trent’s car was ready.
I was halfway through solving the entire thing when I stopped.
Why?
It wasn’t my car.
It wasn’t my weekend.
And I was holding the sick child Trent had just told me to figure out.
So I closed the email.
It wasn’t my car.
Once Silas and I were home, I sent Trent exactly one message.
“Silas has been seen. He’s home. We have instructions for tonight. Your car is ready at Miller’s.”
His answer came five minutes later.
“Good. So we’re good? 😃”
“Your car is ready at Miller’s.”
I looked at Silas asleep on the couch with his hair stuck damply to his forehead.
Then I typed: “Silas is.”
I put my phone down.
Saturday was not dramatic.
It was mostly crackers.
Silas ate half of one.
Saturday was not dramatic.
I celebrated like he’d been accepted into college.
He refused lunch, slept on me for ninety minutes, and became deeply offended by the medicine syringe.
Trent sent one message around noon.
“How’s he doing?”
Trent sent one message around noon.
I answered honestly.
“Fever lower. Drinking a little. Still tired.”
He sent a thumbs-up.
That was it.
Normally, I would have filled the silence.
I answered honestly.
I’d have told him what the doctor said, what time the next dose was due, whether Silas had eaten, and what his temperature had been at 9:15.
That was how our marriage worked.
The pediatrician was saved on speed dial; the daycare tuition schedule was burned into my head.
That was how our marriage worked.
I’d driven to three different grocery stores just to find the crackers Silas ate when sick.
In the hall closet, my hand could find the spare wipes in the dark, and my fingers automatically gave his blue cup a second tight twist so it wouldn’t leak over the rug.
My hand could find the spare wipes in the dark.
Trent knew things too.
He knew kickoff times.
He knew where we kept batteries.
He could identify almost any problem with the grill by sound.
I’d always thought our different areas of expertise meant we balanced each other.
Trent knew things too.
Sunday morning, Trent called.
Silas was on the living-room rug pushing a wooden truck slowly back and forth.
“Hey,” Trent said. “I need you to do something.”
“What?”
“Dave has to leave earlier than he thought. I’ll bring your SUV home, then you follow me to Miller’s so I can get my car.”
“I need you to do something.”
“I can’t.”
A pause.
“What do you mean?”
“Silas is still sick.”
“He’s better.”
“He’s better than Friday.”
“So put him in the car.”
“He needs to rest.”
“Silas is still sick.”
Trent sighed.
“He can rest in his seat. Heather, it’ll take twenty minutes.”
I looked at the thermometer on the coffee table.
Twenty minutes.
The exact distance between our sick son and the father who hadn’t wanted to miss the beginning of a game.
“I know.”
“He can rest in his seat. Heather, it’ll take twenty minutes.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“I said no.”
Another pause.
“Okay, so what am I supposed to do?”
I looked at Silas.
He drove his wooden truck over my foot.
“You’re a father, Trent. Figure it out.”
“Okay, so what am I supposed to do?”
Silence.
Then he hung up.
I didn’t feel triumphant.
Mostly I needed to change Silas’s diaper.
About forty minutes later, my phone rang again.
Dave.
I didn’t feel triumphant.
I answered because I assumed something had happened.
“Hey, Heather.”
“Hi.”
There was an awkward pause.
“Silas okay?”
“Getting there.”
“Good.”
Another pause.
Then Dave said, “I didn’t know.”
I assumed something had happened.
“Know what?”
“That he took your SUV without asking.”
I sat down.
Apparently Trent had complained about being stranded.
Dave had asked why I wouldn’t simply drive him.
Then Trent explained.
Not my version.
His.
Dave had asked why I wouldn’t simply drive him.
Dave had gotten as far as Silas being two years old with a 103 fever before his opinion changed.
“He said you would’ve said no if he’d asked,” Dave continued.
“Probably.”
“Yeah.” Dave exhaled. “That’s usually why people ask.”
“He said you would’ve said no if he’d asked.”
I almost laughed.
“I’ve got to head out,” he said. “I just wanted to check on the little guy.”
“Thanks.”
When Trent finally came home that afternoon, he was driving my SUV.
He parked badly.
“I just wanted to check on the little guy.”
That was how I knew he was angry.
He came through the front door carrying his overnight bag.
“You made me look like an idiot in front of Dave.”
I was sitting beside Silas on the couch.
“I wasn’t there.”
“You made me look like an idiot in front of Dave.”
Trent dropped the bag.
“You know what I mean.”
“I really don’t.”
“He spent the whole morning acting like I abandoned my kid.”
“You told him what happened.”
“Because I thought he’d understand.”
“You told him what happened.”
“Apparently he did,” I said.
Trent rubbed his forehead.
“Can we not do this?”
I almost admired that.
Three days after telling me to figure out transportation with a sick toddler, he was exhausted by the conversation.
“Can we not do this?”
He pointed toward the garage.
“Come on. Miller’s closes soon.”
“I’m not going.”
“Heather.”
“Silas is sleeping.”
“Wake him up.”
I looked at him.
“Wake him up.”
Trent continued.
“He’ll fall asleep again in the car.”
I looked at Silas asleep beneath his blanket.
“No.”
Trent’s voice rose.
“Then how am I supposed to get my car?”
“He’ll fall asleep again in the car.”
“Whatever you’d do if I wasn’t here.”
He stared at me.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
I looked at the medicine log on the coffee table.
“I thought we were a team, Trent.”
“We are.”
“No.”
“I thought we were a team, Trent.”
He opened his mouth.
I kept going.
“I found out this weekend that I’m the backup plan.”
His face lost some of its irritation.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Is it?”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“I made one bad call, Heather.”
“You left me without transportation when Silas needed medical care.”
“I know.” He rubbed both hands over his face. “I keep hearing what I texted you. The part about being a mother. Figuring it out. All of it.”
“I made one bad call, Heather.”
I waited.
“I wish I could take every word back,” he said.
“You can’t.”
“I know.”
Trent sat down across from me.
“What do you want?”
“I wish I could take every word back.”
For once, I didn’t answer immediately.
“I want you to know how this house works.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“I want you to know how this house works.”
“I want you to know Silas’s doctor’s name without asking me. I want you to know when he needs medicine. I want you to know what daycare sends home. I want you to be able to buy groceries without texting me from aisle four.”
“Heather, you’re better at that stuff.”
“I want you to know Silas’s doctor’s name without asking me.”
“Neither was I until I learned it.”
That stopped him.
“If we’re staying married, this changes.”
Trent looked toward Silas.
Our son stirred beneath his blanket.
“If we’re staying married, this changes.”
Then he sat up, hair damp and crooked.
“Mama.”
“I’m here, baby.”
Trent leaned forward.
“When does he get medicine again?”
The answer was sitting on the tip of my tongue.
“When does he get medicine again?”
Instead, I pointed toward the paper on the coffee table.
“It’s on there.”
Trent looked at me.
Then he picked up the sheet and read it twice.
His eyes moved to the medicine bottle.
I stayed where I was.
He picked up the sheet and read it twice.
“Six-thirty?”
I nodded.
He measured the medicine while Silas watched suspiciously.
“No.”
Trent crouched beside him.
“I know, buddy.”
He measured the medicine while Silas watched suspiciously.
It took him three attempts, one cartoon video, and a cracker, but Silas swallowed it.
I stayed on the couch.
Monday morning, Trent arranged his own ride to Miller’s.
I didn’t ask how.
That felt surprisingly good.
I didn’t ask how.
Over the next week, nothing changed dramatically.
That was probably the point.
Trent learned the pediatrician’s name.
He downloaded the daycare app.
He ruined one load of Silas’s laundry by putting a red washcloth in with his pajamas.
He downloaded the daycare app.
I considered that educational.
Saturday morning, I came downstairs expecting the usual question about breakfast.
Instead, Silas was wearing sneakers and carrying his stuffed dinosaur.
Trent stood by the refrigerator with the grocery list.
“Where are you two going?”
I considered that educational.
“Follow-up appointment. Then groceries.”
He scanned the list.
“We need milk.”
“Almost.”
He checked again.
“Bananas.”
He scanned the list.
Silas lifted both arms.
“Nanas!”
Trent laughed.
“Apparently bananas.”
Outside, he opened his own car.
The spare car seat was installed in the back.
Outside, he opened his own car.
He put Silas in, pulled the straps over his shoulders, and paused.
One strap was twisted.
My feet nearly carried me toward them automatically.
I stopped.
Trent studied the diagram printed on the side of the seat.
One strap was twisted.
He unbuckled Silas, fixed the strap, and tried again.
Click.
He checked the chest clip.
Then he closed the door.
Before getting in, Trent looked toward me.
He didn’t wave like he’d accomplished something extraordinary.
He checked the chest clip.
Good.
He hadn’t.
He was taking his son to an appointment and buying groceries.
That was parenting.
I went inside.
That was parenting.
My phone sat on the kitchen table beside a fresh cup of coffee.
I turned my phone facedown.
Then I sat at the table and drank my coffee while it was still hot.
I turned my phone facedown.
