My daughter-in-law didn’t even say hello. She just shoved the cages onto my rug and said, “There are your instructions.” I smiled. By dawn, when the ship set sail from Miami, my absence was going to completely ruin their lives.
The house still smelled like candle wax and funeral lilies when Austin walked in without knocking.
Ernest had been gone just one week.
I had put him in the ground on a gray Tuesday wearing the white linen shirt he loved, with his rosary folded between his hands and the little Key West photo tucked into his pocket like a secret I wanted him to keep.
For seven days, I cried until my eyes burned.
On the eighth day, I bought the cruise ticket.
Not because I was being dramatic.

I looked at her.
“Chloe, I just buried my husband.”
She sighed like I had interrupted her vacation.

Austin did not blush.
He did not correct her.
He only shrugged and said, “Besides, that’s why you’re here, Mom. You’ll get bored all by yourself.”
The parakeets kept screeching.

At five-thirty, I got into a taxi headed for the Port of Miami.

That was when his confidence finally cracked.

It was a copy of the paper he had never bothered to ask about, the one Ernest and I signed when my husband still had enough strength to hold a pen and enough sense to know our son was already circling the house like inheritance was a dinner reservation.
Austin made a sound I can still hear.
