“I made this in the garage,” Danny said. “It took me a long time.”

“Dad is still in it.”

She mouthed, “I never said that.”

“Maybe I said it.”
That got another laugh.

I thought he was finished.
The MC did too.

“Wait.”

Danny had wandered away near the food stalls when he was eight.
We found him within six minutes.

“No.”

His face softened.
“Okay.”
“And for thinking people might compare your gift.”
“They did.”
My stomach tightened.
“They did?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
He shrugged.
“Everybody.”
I must have looked horrified because he laughed.
“People compare stuff.”
He pointed at the box.
“Doesn’t change it.”
That was Danny.
Every once in a while, he’d say something so simple that it made the rest of us sound ridiculous.
The next morning, I went into the garage.
For months, it had been forbidden territory.
Now the door was open.
There were wood scraps everywhere.
Sandpaper.
Pencils.
A burned piece of oak with the name MARRIANE spelled wrong.
Two failed sparrows.
Danny had been right.

“He wanted the box to be heavy.”
“What?”
“He kept saying that.”
I looked at the oak box.
It was heavy.

“He said people keep things that feel heavy.”
My eyes filled.

I left for college in September.

I went.
For a while after prom, I wondered whether choosing the farther school somehow meant I had missed Danny’s message.
