I turned back toward the clerk.
“When?”
“Before you arrived.”
My eyebrows pulled together.
“That doesn’t make sense. We only booked this trip a few weeks ago.”

“I know.”
I looked down at the envelope again.
“Did he tell you what was inside?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know I was supposed to receive it this morning?”
“He gave very specific instructions.”
My heart began pounding.
“What instructions?”
She hesitated.
“He said that if Lily never got to put her feet in the ocean, I was supposed to make sure you received this before you checked out.”
My breath caught.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.
I looked through the glass doors again.
Tony had finished loading the luggage.
He was standing beside the car with his hands resting on his hips, staring toward the ocean in the distance.

“Yeah.”

“How’s our girl?”
“Asleep.”
He nodded.
“Good. Let her sleep.”
I looked at him.

“Mom?”

She smiled.

I looked at Tony.

“Adam’s brother?”
Tony nodded.

I couldn’t move.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he asked me not to.”
“Why?”
Tony looked down.
“Because he had something to give Lily.”
He reached into the kitchen drawer.

I recognized Adam immediately.

Tony looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.
“I never wanted to erase Adam.”
His voice cracked.
