At 6:30 Friday evening, my doorbell rang.
My three grandchildren, eight, six, and four, were standing on my porch with backpacks and a suitcase.
Brooks, the oldest, had one hand wrapped around the suitcase handle.
Owen stood beside him with his school backpack hanging from one shoulder, and little Jenny was hugging a stuffed rabbit to her chest.
Behind them, Vanessa was already backing out of my driveway.
I hurried outside and called her immediately.
“Where are you going?”
“Weekend trip. Eric knows.”
Eric was my son.
“Nobody asked me to babysit.”
She sighed loudly enough for me to hear it through the phone.
“You’ll manage.”

A knot formed in my stomach.
“Did she say you’d live here?”
“No. She said if things didn’t work out, you’d make sure we were okay.”
That was how an eight-year-old had arrived at the idea that he might be moving in with me.
I called Vanessa.

Then I noticed an envelope tucked into the side pocket of the suitcase.
My son’s name was written across it.
“Eric.”

Whatever was inside belonged to him.

To Eric.

Then he said, “Mom, don’t call Vanessa. I’m coming home.”
“Eric, what’s going on?”

“We argued on Wednesday.”
“About what?”

She said nothing.

“Wait.”

“That’s me.”

“The fourth ticket.” He turned the screen toward me. “It’s mine.”

But if Eric had a ticket too, then what exactly was she doing?
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“You were supposed to be working until tomorrow.”
“I am supposed to be working until tomorrow.”
“No.” She looked at him. “You were supposed to meet us tonight.”
“How, Vanessa? Through telepathy?”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
“After I picked up the kids.”
Eric stared at her.
She buried her face in her hands for a moment.
“My ticket is separate. I booked mine first. That reservation is yours and the kids’.”
“Where are we supposedly going?”
“To my mom’s.”
That was the argument, apparently.
Vanessa’s mother lived several states away and owned a small house nearby that had been sitting vacant since her aunt moved into assisted living.
Months earlier, Vanessa had suggested they move there.
Eric hadn’t said yes.
But, according to him, he hadn’t said no either.
“I said we’d talk about it when this project was finished,” he told her.
“You always say that.”
“Because I can’t quit my job every time you’re frustrated.”
“I never asked you to quit your job.”
“You asked me to move three states away.”
“I asked you to talk about it!”
Their voices were rising.
“Stop,” I said.
They both looked at me.
“The children are in this house.”
Vanessa glanced toward the hallway and lowered her voice.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt them.”
“Then why did Brooks think he might be living with me?”
Her face fell.
“What?”
“He asked me over breakfast.”
Vanessa looked toward the hallway again.
“I told him things might change.”
“You told him to pack his important things.”
“I didn’t know what Eric was going to do.”
Eric gave a short, incredulous laugh.
“So you packed the kids, bought me an airline ticket, and decided you’d surprise me with a choice?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“You wouldn’t make one.”
The room went quiet.
She looked at him.
“For eight months, I’ve asked you what we’re doing. I’ve asked if you’re going to keep working every night. I’ve asked if we can move. I’ve asked if you can transfer. Every time, you say later.”
“I have responsibilities.”
“So do I.”
“I know that.”
“No, you don’t.”
She pointed toward him.
“Do you know how many dinners you’ve missed this month?”
Eric’s expression turned grim.
“This isn’t about dinner.”
“You’re right. It’s about everything being later. Vacation, later. Moving, later. Having one weekend where you aren’t checking your phone, later.”
She swallowed.
“I got tired of waiting for later.”
I understood her anger more than I wanted to.
Eric had always been responsible, almost to a fault.
After his father died, he’d become even more determined to provide for everyone around him.

“You wrote that you stopped believing ‘later’ was a time. You thought it was where I put things I didn’t want to deal with.”
She wiped her eyes.
“That’s what it felt like.”
Eric sat down.
For the first time since he’d arrived, some of the anger left him.
“I should have listened sooner.”
Vanessa stared at him.
He continued.
“But you should have talked to me before you scared our kids half to death.”
“I did talk to you.”
“No. You talked. I postponed. Then you stopped talking and started planning.”
Neither of them argued with that.
Then Eric said something Vanessa clearly hadn’t expected.
“I’ve been talking to Halden about reducing my travel.”
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
Halden was Eric’s supervisor.
“I’ve been trying to move into the local operations position.”
“For how long?”
“About a month.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know if I’d get it.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“I didn’t want to promise something and then disappoint you.”
She laughed bitterly.
“So instead you said nothing.”
“Yes.”
That single word seemed to take the fight out of both of them.
They had each been making decisions alone.
Eric had been doing it because he thought silence was safer than uncertainty.
And Vanessa thought she’d become convinced silence meant rejection.
Still, there were three children down the hallway whose lives had nearly been rearranged because of it.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You keep telling us what Eric wouldn’t do.”
She looked at me.
“When did Brooks get a vote?”
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
“Owen?”
She looked down.
“Jenny?”
Tears slid down her cheeks.
“I thought once we got there, they’d be fine.”
“That’s exactly the problem.”
I stood.
“You decided everyone would be fine after you made the decision for them.”
“Irene, I’m sorry.”
“You told me, ‘You’ll manage.'”
She winced.
“You were right. I managed.”
I kept my voice calm.
“But don’t ever confuse my ability to handle something with your right to dump it on me.”
She nodded slowly.
“I won’t.”
Eric canceled the children’s reservation that afternoon.
Nobody boarded a plane.
Vanessa spent several nights with a friend while she and Eric cooled down, but the children stayed in their own home.
Eric rearranged his work schedule enough to be there.
They didn’t fix their marriage in one weekend.
I would’ve trusted them less if they claimed they had.
Over the next several weeks, they began having the conversations they’d both been avoiding.
Vanessa stopped treating moving as the only possible solution.
Eric stopped treating every difficult conversation as something that could wait until his schedule cleared.
About a month later, Vanessa came to my house alone.
She stood on the same porch where she’d left the children.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
I waited.
“I’m sorry I left them here without asking you. I knew you might say no, so I made sure you couldn’t.”
It wasn’t a pretty apology.
It was better.
It was true.
I accepted it.
Trust took longer.
A few weeks after that, Eric arrived at Sunday dinner before the food was on the table.
That hadn’t happened in months.
Vanessa arrived with the children a little later.
They weren’t magically happy.
I could still see tension between them sometimes.
But they were talking.
Actually talking.
And when Vanessa needed me to watch the children the following Saturday, she called four days ahead.
“Would you be available?”
I smiled at the phone.
“Yes,” I said. “This time, I will.”
