Emily slowly pulled her wrist away from my mother’s hand.

“If you refuse to help Kyle,” she said, “then don’t blame us when people hear where your little business idea really came from.”
Emily stopped moving.

Kyle looked up from his plate for the first time in several minutes.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Mom turned toward me as if I were the one making dinner uncomfortable.

“I am now,” Emily said.

“No,” I said. “I think the wording is finally getting very clear.”
My mother’s eyes narrowed. She turned toward me instead of Emily.
“You’re her mother. You should understand what happens when one child in a family is allowed to believe money makes her better than everyone else.”
I felt heat rise into my face. “She has not said she is better than anyone.”
“She doesn’t have to say it.”
Emily leaned forward. “What have I done to Kyle?”
Mom’s mouth opened, but Emily kept going.
“Not what my savings make him feel. Not what Aunt Lorraine thinks people might compare. What have I actually done to him?”
Nobody had an answer that survived being spoken aloud.
Lorraine finally said, “You make everything look easy.”

“A simple request has a yes or no answer,” Emily said. “What Grandma just threatened me with isn’t a request.”

Mom pushed her chair back. “Turn that off.”
Emily shook her head. “Not while you’re threatening to tell people I stole Kyle’s idea.”
“I said people might hear a different version.”
Kyle stared at his grandmother. “There is no different version.”
Mom looked at him sharply. He continued anyway.
“I didn’t give her the idea. I didn’t help build it. I didn’t invest in it. I made fun of it.”
Lorraine whispered his name as a warning.
Kyle looked at his mother. “Why did you tell me Emily wanted to invest?”
“I said she should.”
“No. You said the family was working it out.”
There it was.
The conflict was no longer Emily against a lazy cousin who wanted her money. “I’m sorry,” I said.

Mom nodded once.

And if anyone repeated the claim that Kyle had given her the business idea, she would correct it with the recording.

Mom did not argue.
