My wife was dying when she asked me to find Anna—the woman who had rejected my proposal forty years earlier. I kept that promise. But Anna’s first words made me question everything I thought I knew about my marriage.
The hospital room carried the sharp smell of antiseptic mixed with the faint lavender lotion Carol always kept in her purse. I sat in the vinyl chair beside her bed, holding her fragile hand while the machines kept their slow, steady rhythm.
Thirty-six years of marriage had somehow narrowed into this small square of light.
“Do you remember the porch swing?” I asked.
Her eyes slowly opened. “You painted it green.”
“Our daughter hated it.”
“She was four. She hated everything that wasn’t pink.”
Carol smiled, then winced.
I tightened my hand around hers.
Two days earlier, the doctor had taken me into the hallway. He’d spoken carefully, but only a few words stayed with me.
Spread.
Nothing more.
Comfort.
Carol had entered my life when I was at my lowest. She never pressured me to explain the pain I carried. She simply stayed.
And slowly, then completely, I fell in love with her.

“Except those green eyes,” I said. “They always made her stand out.”
Carol turned her face away.
“They certainly did.”
She stayed silent for a moment.
“Your mother would’ve loved seeing her grown.”
I thought about Ruth, my mother, who had died ten years earlier.
Half of Millfield still remembered her as a saint. She’d taught Sunday school for forty years and never failed to bring a casserole to a grieving neighbor.
“Mama would’ve spoiled her rotten.”
Carol’s fingers suddenly tightened around mine.
“Walt, I’ve been a good wife to you, haven’t I?”
The question caught me off guard.
“You’ve been the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I need you to promise me something. Say yes before I tell you what it is.”
After thirty-six years together, there was no reason to hesitate.
“Anything.”
Carol slowly drew in a breath.
“Find Anna, please. You’ll understand everything once you find her. And please… forgive me in advance.”
The name hit me like a stone dropped into still water.
Anna.
A woman I hadn’t seen in forty years.
“Carol, what are you talking about? Anna who? What do you need me to forgive?”
She only shook her head, barely moving, her lips pressed together as though saying anything more might destroy something.
A nurse appeared in the doorway and quietly told me Carol needed to rest.
I leaned down, kissed my wife’s forehead, and walked into the hallway with my heart pounding against my ribs.
Three days later, Carol was gone.
The house on Maple Street felt hollow in a way I’d never known a house could feel.
Her reading glasses remained on the arm of the recliner.
Her unfinished crossword still rested on the kitchen table.
But all I could hear was her final request.

Anna had been my first love.
In 1985, I asked her to marry me.
Her answer came in a letter.
‘I can’t follow you, Walt. Not with you moving away. Please don’t come looking for me.’
For forty years, I’d believed every word.
For two weeks after Carol’s funeral, I tried convincing myself she’d been confused by medication or half-dreaming when she asked me to find Anna.
But every night, I heard the other part.
‘Forgive me in advance.’
Forgive her for what?
Eventually, I searched through old college groups until a former classmate gave me the number of Diane, one of Anna’s closest friends from those days.
The moment I mentioned Anna, Diane fell silent.
“I have nothing to say to you about that.”
Then she hung up.
A week later, she called me back.
“Anna’s sister married a man from Pittsburgh.”
“You know her name?”
“I remember the married name.”
“Give it to me.”
Three phone calls later, a woman answered.
“Hello?”
I closed my eyes.
Even after four decades, I recognized that voice.
“Anna? This is Walter.”
For several seconds, all I heard was breathing.
Then she whispered, “Walter. My God.”
“Anna, could I come see you?”
“After forty years?”
“I know how that sounds. But Carol asked me to find you before she died. I need to understand why.”
Silence.
“When?”
“Whenever you’re comfortable.”
Another pause.

Saturday morning, I drove four hours to Pittsburgh with Carol’s ring in my pocket.
I sat outside Anna’s house for nearly an hour before finally forcing myself to knock.
Then the door opened.
Her hair was silver now, and soft lines framed her mouth, but her eyes were exactly as I remembered them.
And somehow, they looked familiar in another way too.
I couldn’t understand why.
“Walter.”
“Anna. I’m sorry to appear like this out of nowhere. My wife, Carol… she passed away a few weeks ago. Before she died, she asked me to find you.”
Something shifted across Anna’s face.
Recognition.
Sorrow.
And a tired kind of understanding.
“Yes,” she said quietly. “I think I know why.”
She stepped aside.
“Come in, Walter. You’d better sit down.”
Anna poured two cups of coffee, her hands trembling slightly.
“What did Carol want me to know?”
She sat across from me.
“That I never turned you down because you moved.”
My chest went cold.
“Then why?”
“Your mother came to my apartment. Spring of 1985. She wore that gray coat with the fur collar. Do you remember it?”
“I remember.”
“She sat on my sofa and told me I was unsuitable. Wrong background. Wrong family. Wrong future for her son.”
I carefully placed my mug on the table because my hand had started shaking.
“My mom said that?”
“She said more than that.”
“What did she threaten you with?”
“She threatened to get Dad fired when my parents were already barely surviving. My sister was about to marry a good man, and Ruth threatened to destroy her reputation.”
“She couldn’t have done that.”
Anna held my gaze.
“Couldn’t she?”
I had no answer.
Everyone in Millfield listened to Ruth.
“My mother,” I whispered. “My mother taught Sunday school.”
“Your mother had power,” Anna said softly. “And she used it on a twenty-year-old girl whose family had nothing.”
“So the letter you sent me—the one saying you couldn’t handle the distance…”
“I wrote it that night. I cried the whole way through it.”
I stared down at the coffee between my hands.
“What happened afterward? Did you marry?”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
“Children?”
“No. There was never anyone else I could imagine that life with.”
Forty years suddenly felt much longer.
For all that time, I’d believed Anna simply hadn’t loved me enough.
“Why didn’t you come to me? Even after you left?”
Anna lowered her eyes to her hands.
“I found out I was pregnant three weeks later.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“I was pregnant, Walter.”
The room seemed to shift beneath me.
A child.
Mine and Anna’s.
For forty years, I’d believed I’d lost only her.
“You were carrying MY CHILD?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to the baby?”
Anna turned away.
“I gave her up.”
“Why?”
“I was twenty, alone, and terrified. Your mother had convinced me you didn’t want me anymore. She said the baby would have a better life with a family who could give her what I couldn’t.”
“And you believed her?”
“I didn’t think I had another choice.”
My chest tightened.
“Where is she now?”
“I don’t know.”
I thought that was the revelation that would change everything.
I didn’t realize Anna had barely begun.
“You never tried to tell me?”
“I tried. I went to your mother’s house. I thought the baby might make her accept us and help me reach you.”
“What happened?”
“Ruth wouldn’t give me your number. She reminded me what would happen to my family if I contacted you.”
“That’s why you disappeared?”
“That—and what she told me next.”
“What?”
“That you’d already moved on.”
“With who?”
“Carol.”
I stared at her.
“You knew about Carol?”
“Only what Ruth told me.”
“That we’d already started something?”
Anna nodded.
“She said you’d chosen Carol before I’d even left town.”
“But that wasn’t true.”
“I know that now.”
Then Anna hesitated.
“There’s more.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“Carol was there that day.”
“At my mother’s house?”
“Yes. She’d stopped by with a casserole. Ruth thought she’d already left, but she was still in the parlor.”
I couldn’t move.
“Carol heard what my mother said to you?”
“Every word.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she told me. About fifteen years ago, she tracked me down through my sister and sent me a letter. I never answered.”
My throat tightened.
“So she knew why you left.”
“Yes.”
“And all those years, she watched me believe you’d walked away because you didn’t want me.”
Anna looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“She said nothing… and then she married me.”
“I’ve wondered for forty years whether she ever told you.”
“She didn’t.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
“I’m not telling you to hate her,” Anna whispered. “I’m telling you because your wife sent you here, and I think she wanted you to finally know.”
I looked at her.
“Anna, did you ever try to find our daughter?”
“Of course I thought about it.”
“But did you look?”
“I couldn’t. It was a private adoption. I didn’t know the family’s name, where they lived—anything.”
And suddenly, something clicked into place.
“My mother arranged it.”
Anna frowned.
“What?”
“If anyone kept records, she did.”
I pushed myself away from the table.
“I think I know where to look.”
I stood so quickly the chair scraped across the floor.
“Walter.”
“I’m sorry. I have to go.”
One thought followed me during the entire drive home.
Carol hadn’t asked me to forgive my mother.

At the bottom of an old box, I found a shoebox sealed with tape.

Inside were yellowing letters exchanged with a woman named Marjorie.
I read the first letter twice before I understood what it meant.
‘Dear Ruth, the young woman arrived Tuesday. She is nearly six months along. She still asks whether Walter knows about the child. I assured her, as you instructed, that contacting him would only make matters worse.’
My hands began to shake.
The next letter was dated four months later.
‘The girl has finally signed the surrender papers. She remains convinced Walter has begun a new life and does not want to be contacted.’
I stopped breathing.
But Anna wasn’t the only person my mother had deceived.
Another letter came next.
‘A local couple has come forward for the private placement. Carol seems especially eager. I understand Walter has been told only that the birth mother requested a closed adoption. Discretion will be maintained as you requested.’
I sank against the attic wall.
Rebecca.
My daughter Rebecca.
Anna’s eyes.
That was why Anna’s eyes had seemed so familiar.
Rebecca had Anna’s eyes.
For all those years, I’d looked into them without ever knowing whose they were.
Then I found another envelope.
The handwriting on it was more familiar to me than my own.
Carol’s.
It was addressed to my mother.
‘Ruth, I can’t keep doing this. Walter still believes Anna left because she stopped loving him. I heard what you said to her that day, and I should have told him then. I didn’t. Part of me was afraid that if he knew the truth, he’d go after her.’
I had to stop reading.
Then I continued.
‘Now there’s a baby involved. You keep telling me Anna has signed the papers and wants the child placed somewhere else, but that doesn’t make what we did right. If Walter ever learns the truth, he’ll never forgive either of us.’
Below Carol’s letter were four words written in my mother’s handwriting.
‘Then make sure he doesn’t.’
I couldn’t tell Anna over the phone.

Anna opened it.
“She’s alive,” I said. “I found our daughter.”

“Her name is Rebecca.”
“Rebecca?”
“My Rebecca. The daughter Carol and I adopted.”

“Oh my God.”
“She has a good life.”
“Family?”
“Two boys.”
Tears filled Anna’s eyes.
“I’m a grandmother.”
“Yes.”
She lowered herself onto the porch step and began to cry.
I sat beside her until she finally wiped her face.
“Does she know about me?”
“No.”
“Are you going to tell her?”
Rebecca had buried Carol only weeks earlier.
Now I had to tell her that the woman she’d known as her mother had hidden the truth about her birth for thirty-eight years.
“I don’t know how.”
Anna looked toward the letters.
“Neither did Carol, apparently.”
“What if it destroys everything Rebecca remembers about her?”
“Walter, your mother decided what I was allowed to know. Carol decided what you were allowed to know.”
I stared at the letters.
“And now I’d be deciding for Rebecca.”
“Yes.”

“Dad, what is this?”
“Something your mother should’ve told us years ago.”
“Us?”
I drew a breath.
“Rebecca, my first love, Anna, is your biological mother. And I’m your biological father.”
She stared at me.
“What are you talking about?”
“Read the letters.”
By the second letter, her hands were trembling.
“Mom knew?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca wiped her eyes.
“Was she trying to protect me?”
“Maybe at first. But after a while, I think she was protecting herself too.”
“Did she love me?”
“Every single day.”
Rebecca sat quietly for a moment.
“Does Anna know about me?”
“She knows everything.”
“Does she want to meet me?”
“More than anything.”
Rebecca swallowed.
“I want to meet her. Soon.”
“You should.”
She studied my face.
“Are you okay with that?”
“I’ve had enough people deciding what’s best for someone else.”
She reached across the table and took my hand.
“So have I.”
For the first time since Carol died, I no longer felt like I was carrying her secret by myself.

I still loved Carol.
