No return address.
Just the album wrapped carefully in brown paper and my name written in handwriting I hadn’t seen in two years.

My hands trembled before I even opened it.
Because deep down, I already knew this wasn’t forgiveness.
People don’t vanish for two years and suddenly send kindness in silence.
I sat at the kitchen table alone while rain tapped softly against the windows.
The same kitchen where I destroyed my relationship with my daughter in a single sentence.
“Nobody wanted you — that’s why you’re here.”
Even now, twelve years later, I still hear my own voice when I wake up at night sometimes.

Cruel.
Drunk with anger I claimed wasn’t really about her.

The year we adopted her.
I began reading.

I blinked.
Then kept reading.
Several approved families specifically requested reconsideration after her initial placement…
My breathing became uneven.
At the bottom of the page, highlighted in yellow, was one sentence:
“Infant received one of the highest placement request rates in agency history.”
I stared at the words through blurred vision.
Nobody wanted you.
God.
The cruelty of that sentence suddenly became unbearable in an entirely new way.
Not only had I wounded her.
I had lied.
Horribly.
The next page held photos from her teenage years.
Most of them taken secretly.
School concerts.
Graduation.
College dorm room.
Pictures where I was absent.
Under one photo, she wrote:
“I kept waiting for you to apologize.”
Tears spilled onto the pages.
I whispered aloud into the empty kitchen:
“I’m sorry.”
But apologies spoken to empty rooms arrive years too late.
Near the back of the album sat a sealed envelope.
This time my name looked shakier.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
I almost didn’t send this.

I cried immediately.

Inside the envelope was one last item.
A photograph.
Recent.
Lena standing beside a young couple holding a newborn baby.
On the back she had written:
“I wanted to learn how to become a mother without passing pain forward.”
That sentence changed me permanently.
Not because it punished me.
Because it revealed the exact moment my daughter became stronger than I ever was.
Three months later, after rewriting a thousand versions, I finally mailed her a letter back.
Not defending myself.
Not explaining stress or sacrifice or “not meaning it.”
Just truth.
Just accountability.
And for the first time in my life, I apologized without asking to be forgiven.
Six weeks later, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered shakily.
Silence at first.
Then:
“Hi… Mom.”
I cried before she even finished the word.
