He’s already talking about colleges, a few with strong basketball programs, one with an excellent education department because he’s mentioned, more than once and with a seriousness that surprises me, wanting to work with kids someday, the kind of kids nobody else is checking on closely enough. I haven’t asked him directly whether that ambition traces back to the winter he spent shivering beside a mailbox, waiting for someone to notice. I suspect it does. Some doors, once broken open, never fully close again, and I’ve come to believe that’s exactly as it should be.
Chloe still comes by occasionally, older now too, curious in the way younger cousins often are about the older one who seems to have survived something she only half understood at nine. She and Ethan get along well, better than I might have expected given everything, and I think that’s partly because Ethan never once blamed her for the things she saw and couldn’t stop, the coat hidden in the closet, the door locked from the outside. He understood, even at fourteen, that she was a child too, caught in the same house, working with far less power than any of the adults who should have used theirs better.
Last winter, on a night nowhere near as cold as that Thanksgiving but cold enough to matter, Ethan came downstairs and found me checking the thermostat before bed, the way I do every night out of habit now, making sure the house stays warm enough for both of us straight through until morning.
“You still do that every night?” he asked, leaning in the doorway.
“Every night.”
He didn’t say anything else, just nodded and went back upstairs, but I heard him pause at the top of the stairs for a moment before his bedroom door clicked shut, softly, the way doors are supposed to close in a house where nobody has anything to fear on the other side of them.
