I remembered something from when Mason was six. Carol had taught both grandchildren a little signal for emergencies.
Three knocks meant: I need help.
My heart began pounding.
“It’s Grandpa,” I said again. “I’m opening the door.”
“No!”
Lily’s scream was so sudden that I nearly dropped the phone.
Her eyes opened wide.
“Grandpa, please don’t.”
“That’s your brother in there.”
She shook her head violently.
“Not alone.”
Those two words changed everything.
I stepped backward.
“What do you mean?”
Lily stared toward the hallway.
“There was somebody else.”
Before I could ask another question, the closet door rattled.
Mason screamed.
I grabbed the handle.
This time I didn’t hesitate.
I pulled.
The door opened barely six inches before something fell forward and hit my leg.
A small hand.
Mason’s hand.
I yanked the door wider.
My grandson was curled on the floor between coats, blankets, and an overturned plastic storage bin. His wrists were red from whatever had been tied around them. A strip of silver tape hung from one sleeve.
His face was wet with tears.
“Mason!”
I dropped to my knees and pulled him toward me.
He clung to my shirt so hard that his fingernails dug through the fabric.
“Grandpa.”
“I’m here. I’m here.”
“They said you wouldn’t come.”
“Who said that?”
He looked over my shoulder.
His eyes fixed on Lily.
Then he whispered something that made the blood drain from my face.
“Mom.”
Lily began crying.
“No, Mason.”
He shook his head.
“She told me Grandpa would believe her.”
I looked at Lily.
She was trembling.
“Grandpa, I tried to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
She glanced at the orange prescription bottle on the kitchen counter.
“They gave me the medicine.”
My eyes moved back to the bottle.
“But they told me it was vitamins.”
Mason started coughing.
I pulled him closer.
“What happened tonight?”
Neither child answered.
Then the front door made a sound.
A soft metallic click.
Someone was unlocking it.
I stood immediately.
The dispatcher heard it too.
“Sir, is someone entering the residence?”
I didn’t answer.
I pushed Mason behind me and held Lily against my side.
The front door opened.
Footsteps entered the house.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Whoever it was wasn’t afraid of being there.
A man’s voice came from the darkness.
“Dad?”
My son’s voice.
Brian.
For one strange second, relief washed over me.
Then I remembered the empty driveway.
The note.
The drugged child.
The locked closet.
And Lily’s warning.
Brian stepped into the hallway.
His face looked pale.
His hair was wet, as if he’d been outside in the rain.
But there was something wrong with his expression.
He wasn’t surprised to see me.
He looked almost disappointed.
“Dad,” he said quietly. “You weren’t supposed to come.”
I tightened my grip around Lily.
“Where’s Marissa?”
Brian didn’t answer.
“Where were you?”
Still nothing.
Then his eyes moved to Mason.
My grandson flinched.
That was all I needed to see.
I put myself between them.
“Stay away from my grandchildren.”
Brian’s jaw tightened.
“Dad, you don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
“I was trying to protect them.”
Lily suddenly whispered, “He’s lying.”
Brian’s eyes snapped toward her.
The room went silent.
Then he said something I will never forget.
“Lily, you promised.”
Her face crumpled.
“Promised what?”
Brian didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached slowly into his jacket.
Mason screamed.
“Grandpa, don’t let him get the key!”
Brian stopped.
I stared at his hand.
“Key to what?”
For the first time that night, genuine fear appeared on my son’s face.
Not fear of me.

Behind him.
From somewhere outside the house came a faint metallic sound.
Like a car door closing.
Brian turned toward the front window.
His face went completely white.
“They found us.”
I didn’t understand.
“Who?”
He looked at me.
Then at the children.
Then at the closet.
And finally he whispered:
“Your wife knew.”
My entire body went cold.
“Don’t you dare bring Carol into this.”
Brian’s voice cracked.
“She knew before she died.”
I stepped toward him.
“What did she know?”
He opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, every light in the house went out.
The darkness was absolute.
Lily screamed.
Mason grabbed my hand.
And somewhere upstairs, a door slowly opened.
Then came a woman’s voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
Impossible.
“Brian?”
My blood turned to ice.
Because I knew that voice.
It sounded exactly like Carol.
And Carol had been dead for three years.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I stood in the darkness with Mason’s hand locked around mine and Lily pressed against my side.
Then the voice came again.
“Brian?”
Carol.
My wife’s voice.
The same gentle tone she used when she wanted me to come downstairs without waking the children.
The same little hesitation before my name.
The same warmth.
Except Carol had been dead for three years.
My mind tried to explain it.

Brian whispered, “Don’t answer.”
I looked at him.
“That was your mother’s voice.”
“I know.”
His answer was barely audible.
Mason tugged at my sleeve.
“Grandpa…”
“What?”
He pointed toward the stairs.
“There.”
A tiny red light was glowing on the second-floor landing.
I could barely see it.
It looked like the indicator light on a small camera.
Then another red light appeared.
And another.
One above the stairs.
One near the hallway.
One facing the front door.
My stomach tightened.
“This house is wired.”
Brian closed his eyes.
“I didn’t do it.”
“Then who did?”
He didn’t answer.
Suddenly the lights came back on.
The hallway was empty.
The upstairs door was closed.
The red lights were gone.
But on the floor at the bottom of the stairs sat a small white envelope.
I stared at it.
My name was written across the front.
DAD.
Brian whispered, “Don’t touch it.”
I turned toward him.
“You seem to know a lot about what’s happening.”
“I know enough to be afraid.”
“Then start talking.”
He looked at Lily and Mason.
“Not here.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Not here? My granddaughter was drugged. My grandson was tied up inside a closet. Someone has cameras in this house, and I just heard my dead wife’s voice upstairs.”
Brian swallowed.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
He looked toward the windows.
“The trip to Florida was never real.”
Mason lowered his head.
“I knew it.”
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
He nodded.
“Mom packed suitcases. But she didn’t put clothes in them.”
Brian stepped closer.
“Marissa has been lying to you for months.”
The name hit me harder than it should have.
“My daughter-in-law?”
“She’s been taking money from someone.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
He looked exhausted.
“I expect you to believe the children.”
Lily finally spoke.
“Grandpa, Mom said we had to leave because someone was watching the house.”
I knelt beside her.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you see them?”
She shook her head.
“But Mason did.”
I turned.
Mason’s face had gone pale.
“Who did you see, buddy?”
He stared at the floor.
“The man with Grandpa’s picture.”
My heart stopped.
“What picture?”
He pointed toward the study.
I followed his finger.
The study door was open.
Inside, the desk lamp was on.
And sitting on the desk was a framed photograph of me.
But it wasn’t one I’d ever seen.
It showed me standing beside Carol in our backyard.

I slowly raised my eyes.
Brian was watching me.
“What is it?”

I turned.

Lily pointed.

He pulled harder.
