The line went dead.
Roland slowly lowered his phone.
His mother looked at him.
“What did he mean by Caldwell?”
“I don’t know.”
“You must know.”
“I said I don’t know.”
Faye stepped closer.
“Roland, what is going on?”
He didn’t answer.
Because for the first time in six days, he realized there were things about his wife he had never bothered to learn.
And suddenly, that frightened him more than her leaving.
The next morning, I woke before sunrise.
For several seconds, I didn’t know where I was.
Then I heard the tiny sounds coming from the bassinet beside my bed.

My father didn’t answer immediately.

“Dad?”
