Patricia’s hand flew to her chest.
“You’ve prepared your whole life for this. And you could still have a son someday. Don’t ruin everything now.”

Then Walter turned toward her.

“You spent years building a place in this company, Patricia. Which is why you know exactly what I’m taking from you.”

“No more company dinners. No anniversary events. No speaking for this family to clients. And no part in deciding who comes after me.”

“You painted your granddaughter’s crib black because you thought she embarrassed our legacy. You don’t get to represent that legacy anymore.”
Patricia stared at him.
“What am I supposed to tell people?”

“I won’t humiliate you, Patricia. But I won’t lie for you either. If anyone asks why you’re no longer representing this family at company events, they’ll get an honest answer.”

“And that’s the company. This is my family.”
Patricia looked at him.
“You don’t come into our home unless we invite you. You don’t make decisions about Olivia. And you don’t get to wait around for a grandson while treating our daughter like the child who came first by mistake.”

Patricia turned to me, trembling.
“I’ll fix all of it, I promise.”
I held Olivia a little closer.
“Someone else can fix the walls. What you have to fix is whether you can look at her without wishing she were a boy. Until then, you don’t come back on your own terms.”
She had no answer for that.

When Patricia finally left, Stephen stayed beside me.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should’ve stopped this when the comments started.”

Then he looked at Olivia.

Over the next few weeks, Stephen repainted the nursery cream.
He tried to recreate the tiny wildflowers I’d painted before she was born. His first ones looked terrible.
