He rubbed both hands over his face.

I stared at her. “Ryan knew about Maisie before Ava died?”
“He knew she might be his. He hadn’t answered the letter yet.”

“He contacted my daughter. They arranged the test.”

“And it confirmed he was Maisie’s father.”
Nina nodded.
Ryan hadn’t gone looking for another daughter. He’d learned Maisie might be his before Ava died, then confirmed it afterward, when grief had stripped him raw.
I understood his desperation better now.
I still didn’t excuse what he’d done.

“Did you tell him moving us across the street was a bad idea?”
“Several times.”
A floorboard creaked above us.
Maisie appeared on the stairs.
“Grandma?”
Nina turned. “It’s okay, honey.”
Maisie looked at me. “Is Dad in trouble?”
“Grandma?”
“Yes.”
Her face fell.
“Because of me?”
I crossed the room before I answered.
“No. Listen to me, Maisie. Your father made choices without telling me. Those choices belong to him.”
“I thought you knew about me. He showed me Ava’s picture.”

“I don’t want Gabriella thinking I’m her.”
“You don’t have to be Ava,” I said. “You don’t have to be anybody but Maisie.”
Maisie swallowed.
“I wasn’t trying to take anybody’s place. I just wanted to meet my dad.”
That landed harder than anything Ryan had said.
“You deserved the truth too,” I told her. “And you deserved to meet him as yourself.”
“You don’t have to be anybody but Maisie.”
I stepped off Nina’s porch and started across the street.
When I got home, Ryan was standing beside an open bag on our bed.
Before he could speak, I said, “One thing first. Maisie’s mother. When?”
“During the six months we were apart before we got back together. It was brief. You and I weren’t together then.”
“And you never heard from her afterward?”

“Not until the letter.”
“You should leave for a while. Stay at a motel nearby or something.”
Ryan swallowed. “And Maisie?”
“Maisie isn’t the person who lied to me.”
Relief crossed his face.
I stopped him before he could mistake it for forgiveness.
“And Maisie?”
“I’m protecting three girls here, Ryan. Gabriella doesn’t get to spend another day wondering whether her sister somehow came back. Ava’s memory doesn’t get turned into a bridge to another child. And Maisie doesn’t get treated like she arrived here to replace somebody.”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
“I never wanted that.”
“I believe you.”
“I never wanted that.”
He looked up.
“But grief explains why you panicked. It doesn’t give you ownership of everybody else’s choices.”
He sat on the edge of the bed.
“Can we fix us?”
“I don’t know.”
“Aurora…”

“You chose the city. You chose the house. You chose when I got the truth. You don’t get to choose my answer too.”
That night, Gabriella crawled into my bed. I’d told her as much as I could.
“Where’s Daddy?”
“He’s staying somewhere else.”
“Are you mad at Maisie?”

“No.”
“Good. She didn’t make Daddy lie.”
I kissed the top of her head.
“No, sweetheart. She didn’t.”
The next morning, I opened one of Ava’s boxes.
Gabriella found me holding a picture of the two of them covered in flour.
“No, sweetheart. She didn’t.”
“Can I keep that in my room?”
“Yes.”
I put it on her dresser.
Then we crossed the street.
Maisie answered with Nina behind her.
“Gabriella wants to see you,” I said.
“Can I keep that in my room?”
Maisie hesitated. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure about this much: you’re Maisie. That’s who you’re welcome to be.”
Three months later, Ryan and I were still working through our marriage. Nothing was hidden anymore.
One afternoon, Gabriella and Maisie were coloring when Gabriella said, “Ava hated purple.”
Maisie laughed.
Gabriella studied her.
“Are you sure?”
“You laugh differently.”
“Different from Ava?”
“Yeah.”
Then Gabriella handed her the purple crayon.
“That’s okay.”
I watched Maisie take it.
She wasn’t filling Ava’s place.

She was making one of her own.
And protecting my daughter’s memory finally meant something different to me.
It didn’t mean keeping every space empty.
It meant never asking another child to stand in it.
