I adore my granddaughter. But to be honest, Dylan has always been irresponsible.

“Dylan, honey, the thing is, Simon and I already have plans that weekend,” I said carefully. “It’s our anniversary. We booked a little getaway two hours away. It’s non-refundable.”

“Mom, please humor me.”

I hung up and told his father about his weird behavior. Simon raised his eyebrows over his reading glasses.
“That boy knows something we don’t,” my husband said.

Saturday morning, I did what any loving grandmother would do.
I laid out fresh striped towels by the pool. I stocked the fridge with juice boxes and grapes. I set an entire stack of trash bags right on the counter, next to a note that said, “Trash goes in the bags here. Love, Grandma.”

I walked into the living room and pulled up the security app on the TV. My hands weren’t quite steady.
The footage started at 11 a.m. By 11:15 a.m., I counted eight kids. By noon, at least 20! And behind them, spilling onto my patio, were grown women I’d never met, wine glasses in hand, their feet up on my new cushions!

“Simon,” I said. “She let people go through our cabinets.”

My grandchild hesitated. You could see her little face working it out, thinking that couldn’t be right. Then she dropped the juice box in the water and walked away, her shoulders low.

I sat down on the sofa.

My first instinct was to call and let Dylan have it. I even reached for my phone.

I nodded as if my son could see me. “All right, honey.”

I sat there with the phone in my lap, staring out at the pool skimmer leaning against my sliding glass door, its little net full of somebody else’s trash.

“Thank you again for letting the girls have their special day,” she chirped.
