My stomach tightened.
“Then why?”
He turned.
“Because I needed someone I could trust.”
I almost laughed.
Trust?
He had just married a woman who had agreed to marry him largely because of his money.
“I don’t think you understand,” I whispered.
“I understand perfectly.”
He walked to the desk and opened a drawer.
Then he took out an old photograph.
He held it toward me.
I took it.
And everything inside me went cold.
It was a picture of me.
Not a recent picture.
I was maybe seventeen.
I was standing outside my high school, carrying a backpack, looking down at the ground.
Beside me was Chloe.
“How do you have this?”
Arthur’s expression didn’t change.
“I’ve been watching you for years.”
I dropped the photograph onto the table.
“What?”
“Not watching you in the way you’re thinking. I wasn’t following you. I had someone keeping an eye on your circumstances.”
“Why?”
Arthur sighed.
“Because of your father.”
My blood ran cold.
I hadn’t heard that man’s name spoken in years.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then what does he have to do with this?”
Arthur sat down.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.”
I shook my head.
“You don’t know anything about him.”
“I know he worked for my company.”
I froze.
Arthur continued.
“Twenty-two years ago, your father was the financial director of one of my companies. He discovered something he wasn’t supposed to discover.”
“What?”
“Someone had been stealing millions.”
I stared at him.
“And my father found out?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Arthur looked away.
“He tried to expose them.”
A strange pressure built inside my chest.
“My father left us when I was young. My mother told me he was a coward. She said he ran away because he didn’t want responsibility.”
Arthur’s voice softened.
“That was a lie.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What are you saying?”
“Your father didn’t abandon you.”
Arthur reached into the drawer again.
This time, he pulled out a thin brown envelope.
He placed it on the table.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Legal papers.
Photographs.
And finally, a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
My eyes blurred before I even finished the first sentence.
My little girl,
If you’re reading this, then I failed to come home.
I covered my mouth.
Arthur said nothing.
I kept reading.
I need you to know that leaving you was never my choice.
I discovered that someone inside the company was stealing money. When I threatened to expose them, they threatened your mother and you.
I was told that if I went to the police, you would both disappear.
So I made the only choice I thought might keep you alive.
The letter shook between my fingers.
Tears fell onto the paper.
“No…”
I read the final lines.
There is only one person I trust to protect you if something happens to me.
Arthur.
I looked up.
Arthur was watching me.
“You knew my father?”
“He was my friend.”
“Then why didn’t you find me?”
His eyes filled with something I had never seen there before.
Regret.
“I tried.”
“Not hard enough.”
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Arthur didn’t defend himself.
“You’re right.”
That hurt more.
I wiped my face.
“Then why did you let me believe I was unwanted?”
“I didn’t.”
“My whole life I thought my father abandoned me!”
“I know.”
“And you knew the truth?”
“Yes.”
I stood.
“You had no right.”
“I know.”
I turned toward the door.
“I want to leave.”
Arthur’s voice stopped me.
“You can’t.”
I slowly turned around.
“What?”
“That’s what I was trying to tell you.”
He looked toward the windows.
“The people who threatened your father never stopped looking for what he took.”
“What did he take?”
Arthur’s face became grim.
“Evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Who was stealing from my company.”
I felt dizzy.
“Who?”
Arthur didn’t answer.
Instead, he said something that made my blood run colder.
“The person who betrayed your father is still alive.”
I stared at him.
“And they know you’re my wife now.”
Silence filled the room.
Suddenly, I understood why Arthur had said:
It’s too late to walk away.
This marriage wasn’t about money.
It was protection.
But there was something else.
Something Arthur still wasn’t telling me.
“Why me?” I whispered.
Arthur looked directly into my eyes.
“Because your father left the final piece of evidence with you.”
My heart stopped.
“I don’t have anything.”
Arthur shook his head.
“You do.”
“What?”
“Something you’ve had since childhood.”
I tried to remember.
An old necklace.
A box of photographs.
My mother’s jewelry.
Nothing made sense.
Then Arthur said:
“The blue music box.”
I stopped breathing.
The little music box.
I’d had it since I was eight.
My mother had always told me never to open the bottom compartment.
I had forgotten about it.
Arthur saw the realization on my face.
“You remember.”
I nodded slowly.
“Where is it?”
“At my apartment.”
“Then we’re leaving.”
“Why?”
“Because if I’m right, the person who wants that box already knows where you live.”
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a man’s voice whispered:
“You should have taken the money and disappeared.”
My blood turned to ice.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“Your grandfather-in-law isn’t the man you think he is.”
The call ended.
I looked at Arthur.
He had heard every word.
His face had gone completely pale.
Then he whispered:
“They found you.”
And somewhere downstairs, a door slammed.
Arthur immediately grabbed my hand.
“Don’t move.”
For the first time since I’d met him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
And I realized something terrifying.
Arthur wasn’t afraid for himself.
He was afraid for me.Part 3 — The Inheritance
PART 3 — THE END
Arthur locked the bedroom door.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I said stay here.”
“I’ve spent my entire life being told what I don’t deserve to know. I’m done.”
For a moment, he simply stared at me.
Then he nodded.
“Fair enough.”
He opened the safe hidden behind a painting and removed a small black box.
“This contains everything your father discovered.”
I looked at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to the police?”
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.”
“You trusted me.”
“I had no choice.”
The words hurt.
Arthur noticed.
“I didn’t mean it that way.”
“Then what did you mean?”
He looked tired.
“Your father chose you long before either of us knew you’d become my wife.”
Footsteps echoed somewhere downstairs.
Arthur handed me the box.
“Whatever happens, don’t let anyone take this.”
Then the bedroom door suddenly shook.
Someone was trying to force it open.
Arthur moved in front of me.
The door burst open.
A man stepped inside.
I recognized him.
My breath caught.
“Uncle Daniel?”
Daniel had been one of the few people from Arthur’s family I’d met before the wedding.
He smiled.
But there was nothing warm in it.
“So,” he said. “Arthur finally told you.”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“You were always too impatient, Daniel.”
Daniel laughed.
“And you were always too sentimental.”
I looked between them.
“You?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father discovered that I was stealing from the company.”
My stomach dropped.
“You killed him?”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
Arthur answered for him.
“He arranged for your father to disappear.”
Daniel shrugged.
“I didn’t expect him to survive as long as he did.”
I felt sick.
“All these years…”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Give me the box.”
I held it tighter.
“No.”
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.”
“I understand enough.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Then Arthur stepped between us.
“You’re not touching her.”
Daniel laughed.
“You married her because you thought that would protect her?”
Arthur said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“You should have told her the second part.”
I looked at Arthur.
“What second part?”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Daniel, don’t.”
“Tell her.”
I stared at Arthur.
“What?”
He finally looked at me.
“The inheritance.”
My heart sank.
“What about it?”
Arthur’s voice was barely audible.
“There was never an inheritance.”
I didn’t understand.
“What?”
“The marriage contract wasn’t designed to give you my money.”
I stepped backward.
“Then why?”
Arthur’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because if I died unmarried, everything would go to Daniel.”
Daniel smiled.
“But if Arthur had a wife, the estate would remain protected until the investigation into the company fraud was completed.”
I stared at Arthur.
“So you used me.”
“No.”
“You married me to stop him from getting your money.”
“Yes.”
“That is using me.”
Arthur looked down.
“Yes.”
For the first time, I felt something inside me break.
I thought about the wedding.
The dress.
The empty seat where my family should have been.
The guilt over Chloe.
The shame I’d carried because I had chosen money.
And now I realized the truth.
Arthur hadn’t chosen me because I was beautiful.
He hadn’t chosen me because he was lonely.
He had chosen me because he believed I was the only person who could help expose the truth.
I laughed bitterly.
“So we’re both selfish.”
Arthur looked at me.
“Perhaps.”
I wiped away my tears.
“But at least I’m honest about why I came here.”
Daniel suddenly lunged toward me.
Arthur grabbed him.
The two men struggled.
The black box fell from my hands.
It hit the floor.
The lid popped open.
Inside was a small recording device.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph.
My father’s face stared back at me.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a much younger Arthur.
And behind them was Chloe’s father.
I froze.
Chloe’s father.
The man who had welcomed me into his home when my own family wouldn’t.
The man who had always treated me kindly.
The man whose daughter had been my best friend.
I looked at Arthur.
“Chloe’s father knew?”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“He was the one who helped your father hide the evidence.”
My entire world shifted.
“Then why did Chloe hate me for marrying you?”
“Because she didn’t know the whole truth.”
I stared at him.
“Does she know now?”
Before Arthur could answer, my phone rang.
Chloe.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?”
Her voice was trembling.
“Where are you?”
“At Arthur’s.”
A pause.
“Listen to me carefully.”
“Chloe—”
“Don’t trust anyone there.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?”
“I found something in my father’s old files.”
“What?”
“He left a letter.”
My hands began shaking.
“What did it say?”
Chloe started crying.
“It said your father didn’t disappear because of Arthur.”
I looked at Arthur.
“Then why?”
Chloe whispered:
“Because Arthur told him to disappear.”
I couldn’t move.
Arthur’s face went pale.
“That’s not true,” he whispered.
But Chloe was still speaking.
“Your father believed Arthur had betrayed him.”
The room became silent.
I looked at Arthur.
“Is that true?”
He didn’t answer.
“Arthur.”
Finally, he whispered:
“Yes.”
My heart shattered.
“Why?”
“Because I had no choice.”
“There is always a choice.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe my father abandoned me.”
“I know.”
“You married me without telling me any of this.”
“I know.”
Tears streamed down my face.
“Why should I ever forgive you?”
Arthur’s voice broke.
“You shouldn’t.”
He looked at me.
“But I hope one day you’ll understand why I did it.”
Daniel suddenly reached for the black box.
I grabbed it first.
Then I pressed the button on the recording device.
A voice filled the room.
My father’s voice.
“If you’re hearing this, Arthur, then you made the choice I was afraid you would.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
My father continued.
“I know you think you’re protecting my daughter. But hiding the truth from her will only hurt her more.”
The recording continued.
“Tell her everything.”
Arthur whispered:
“I couldn’t.”
My father’s voice answered from the device:
“Then you don’t deserve her trust.”
Silence.
The recording ended.
Daniel suddenly ran toward the door.
Arthur shouted:
“Stop him!”
I didn’t move.
I just stood there, crying.
Because the truth I’d spent my entire life searching for wasn’t one truth.
It was a thousand smaller lies.
My father hadn’t abandoned me.
Arthur hadn’t married me for love.
Daniel had destroyed my family.
And Chloe had never truly stopped being my friend.
Three months later, Daniel was arrested.
The evidence in the box was enough to reopen the investigation into the company’s financial crimes and connect Daniel to the disappearance of several people who had tried to expose him.
Arthur survived the scandal.
But our marriage didn’t.
I filed for divorce.
He didn’t fight me.
Before I left the estate, he gave me one final envelope.
Inside was a letter from my father.
I read it alone.
My little girl,
If life has taught me anything, it’s that people will sometimes lie because they’re afraid of losing you.
But love without truth isn’t love.
Never marry someone because they promise you security.
Never stay with someone because you are afraid of being alone.
And never believe that being ordinary means you are unworthy of being loved.
I cried until I couldn’t see the words anymore.
For years, I had believed I was the ugly girl.
The unwanted girl.
The girl nobody would choose.
But I finally understood.
My worth had never depended on whether someone chose me.
Not Arthur.
Not my family.
Not Chloe.
Not anyone.
I chose myself.
A year later, Chloe and I sat together in a small café.
We hadn’t spoken much during that year.
There were too many apologies between us.
Too much pain.
But that day, she reached across the table and took my hand.
“I was jealous,” she admitted.
“Of what?”
“You had always been the person I thought would never leave me.”
I smiled sadly.
“And I thought you were the person who would never leave me.”
“I didn’t.”
“I know.”
We both cried.
Then she laughed.
“You know what’s funny?”
“What?”
“You married my grandfather for his money.”
I groaned.
“Don’t remind me.”
She smiled.
“And in the end, you walked away from all of it.”
I looked through the café window.
At the ordinary street.
The ordinary people.
The ordinary life waiting for me.
And for the first time, ordinary didn’t feel like an insult.
It felt like freedom.
Arthur had offered me wealth.
My father had left me the truth.
Chloe had given me friendship.
But the most important thing I had gained was something none of them could give me.
The courage to believe that I was enough.
I never became the beautiful girl from the stories.
I never needed to.
Because eventually, I stopped waiting for someone to choose me.
And I chose myself.
THE END.
