A Woman Took Over Half of My 86-Year-Old Grandmother’s Plane Seat, Then Karma Found Her Minutes After Takeoff
My grandmother Rose has never done anything to hurt another person in her eighty-six years.
I know this because I have known her for my entire life and because when you know someone your entire life you develop the specific comprehensive knowledge of them that comes from accumulation rather than observation.
You know not just what they do but what they are capable of and what is outside the range of them, and Rose has always been outside the range of cruelty.
She is the kind of woman who saves the wrappers from presents because she finds them beautiful.
She is the kind of woman who asks the cashier at the grocery store how their day is going and actually waits for the answer.
She is the kind of woman who prays for people who have wronged her rather than talking about them.
She is, in the specific language of a certain generation, a good woman. And the goodness is not performed.
It is structural. It is the thing she is made of at the deepest level, the thing that does not change under pressure or fatigue or inconvenience.
What she did on the plane was entirely consistent with who she is.
You just have to understand the full picture to see why.
My name is Callie Weston.
I am twenty-seven years old.
I am a dental assistant in a small practice in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I live twenty minutes from my grandmother.
I have lived close to her my whole life, with the exception of two years after college when I tried to make a go of it in Charlotte and discovered that making a go of it in Charlotte was harder than expected and that I missed my grandmother considerably more than I had anticipated.
I came back.
I am not sorry about it.
Rose has been the constant of my life since I was very small.
My parents divorced when I was four.
My mother, who is Rose’s daughter, was not well for several years after the divorce. Not in the mental health way, not in the crisis way, but in the quiet way of someone who is trying to reassemble themselves and who needs time and who cannot always be fully present for a four-year-old while they are reassembling.
Rose was present.
Every day.
She picked me up from preschool when my mother was having a hard week.
She taught me to read, specifically the reading beyond the reading my teachers were doing, the reading that was for pleasure, that was for the joy of it.
She made me breakfast on Saturday mornings.
The specific breakfast of pancakes with blueberries, from scratch, with real maple syrup, not the kind from the bottle but the kind that her neighbor had given her from his property in Vermont and that she kept in the cabinet for special occasions and that she counted Saturday mornings with me as a special occasion.
She taught me to sew.
She taught me to bake.
She taught me, by example, the specific lesson that shows up in your life in a hundred different situations and that you only understand came from one place when you are old enough to look back at it, which is: be the person who notices what other people need.
I learned this from Rose.
She has been noticing what people need for eighty-six years.
Now I need to tell you what Rose had never done, which is the other side of the story.
Rose had never been on a plane.
She had never been far from North Carolina except for a few trips to Virginia and one trip to Tennessee in the 1970s to visit cousins.
She had never seen the ocean.
Not the Atlantic.
Not any ocean.
She had grown up inland, raised her family inland, lived inland.
The ocean was the thing she associated with photographs and movies and the specific quality of something beautiful that was for other people, the people who traveled, the people whose lives had the kind of margins that permitted vacations.
Her life had not had those margins.
She had raised three children largely on her husband Edwin’s salary, which was the salary of a man who worked at a hardware store for thirty years and who was the best hardware store employee in the county and who was paid like a hardware store employee rather than like the best one.
Edwin died eleven years ago.
He died in his sleep, which is the way he would have chosen, at seventy-eight, in his own bed, with Rose beside him.
She had been alone since then.
Not unhappy.
But alone.
And one of the things Edwin had said to her, many years before he died, was that he wanted to take her to see the ocean.
He had said it more than once.
He had meant it.
The margins had never materialized.
He was gone before they did.
I had thought about this.
I had thought about it for two years, the specific fact that Rose had a thing she had always wanted to see and that time was not infinite and that I was her granddaughter and that perhaps the margins I could create were the relevant ones.
I am not a person with a great deal of money.
A dental assistant’s salary in Raleigh is not a path to early retirement.
But I had been putting away small amounts in a specific account I labeled Rose for two years.
Not a large amount per paycheck.
Enough that, two years later, there was enough.
Two tickets to Florida.
One hotel with a room that looked at the water.
One week.
I planned to tell her at her kitchen table with coffee.
This is where we had our important conversations.
She had been at the table when I told her about my college acceptance.
She had been at the table when I told her Edwin had died, which she already knew but which I had driven over to sit with her through.
She had been at the table when I told her I was coming home from Charlotte.
The table was where things happened.
I sat down.
I had the folder with the printouts.
I had been going to say something prepared.
I was not going to just put the folder on the table.
But she looked at me when I sat down and she said: what is it?
Just that.
The specific question of a woman who has been reading people for eighty-six years and who knows a significant thing is coming.
I said: I saved up. I want to take you somewhere.
She said: where?
I said: Florida. The coast. I want to take you to see the ocean.
She was very still for a moment.
She said: the ocean.
She said it like a word she had not said in a long time.
Like something she had kept in the back of her mind for years and that was now being brought to the front.
Then she cried.
Rose does not cry easily.
She cried at Edwin’s funeral.
She cried when I graduated.
She cries at certain hymns, the ones that Edwin loved.
She was crying now.
She said, in the way that she says things when she is feeling too much for her voice: you mean I’m actually going to see the ocean?
I said: yes.
She said: in my life?
I said: yes, Grandma. In your life.
She covered her mouth.
She looked at the folder.
She looked at me.
She said: oh, Callie.
She said my name the way she has said it my whole life, which is the specific way of someone for whom the name contains the whole person.
I said: we’re going in six weeks.
She said: I need to find my good blouse.
I laughed.
She laughed.
We drank our coffee and she asked me every question she had about Florida and I answered every one and some I looked up on my phone right there at the table and she watched the phone with the expression she used for technology, which was focused suspicion.
The six weeks leading up to the trip were their own thing.
She mentioned the trip to everyone.
The people at her church.
The women in her Wednesday afternoon card group.
The neighbor who brought her tomatoes from his garden in the summer.
She mentioned it to her doctor at her quarterly appointment and he said: Rose, that’s wonderful, and she said: my granddaughter is taking me to see the ocean.
She said it with the ownership of it.
My granddaughter is taking me.
Not: I am going to Florida.
My granddaughter is taking me.
I heard her say it through her open window when I came to pick her up one afternoon and I sat in my car for a moment because there was something in my chest that needed a moment.
She had a new blouse.
She had gone shopping with one of her church friends.
She showed it to me.
It was blue.
A light blue with small white flowers at the collar.
She said: I want to look right for the ocean.
I said: you look exactly right.
She said: you haven’t seen me in it yet.
I said: I know. But you will.
She held it up and looked at it and said: Edwin would have liked this one.
I said: yes.
She said: he always liked blue on me.
I said: he had good taste.
She said: yes.
She said it simply.
Yes, he did.
The acknowledgment of something true that does not require embellishment.
We flew out of Raleigh on a Thursday morning.
I had chosen the flight time carefully.
Not too early, because early was hard on Rose’s joints.
Not too late, because I wanted us to have the full afternoon at the hotel once we arrived.
The airport was the airport.
The security line was the security line.
Rose had the experience that first-time fliers have at security, which is the specific disorientation of learning the rules of a system that everyone else appears to know already.
She forgot to take off her shoes.
She forgot about the water bottle.
She was patient about both mistakes.
She had the quality of someone who is slightly overwhelmed and choosing not to let the overwhelm define the experience.
She said, after we cleared security: that was exciting.
I said: it was.
She said: is the plane that way?
I pointed.
We found the gate.
We found two seats.
We sat and I got her coffee from the airport coffee place and she looked around at the airport with the specific quality of someone who is very present in a place that is not normally their world.
She said: all these people going places.
I said: yes.
She said: all of them off to see something.
I said: some of them coming back too.
She said: still.
She said: still, all of this motion.
She watched the gate across from ours.
A family with a small child.
A man in a suit who was doing something important on his phone.
A group of young women with matching shirts that appeared to be celebrating something.
She watched all of it with the attention she gave everything.
The specific attention of someone who finds people interesting.
We boarded.
The seats were not together.
This had been the compromise.
Together seats had been available when I booked but they had cost significantly more and the budget was what it was, and I had made the decision that separated seats were manageable.
I would check on her.
She would be fine.
The flight was two hours.
We found her row.
I had booked her the aisle seat because Rose’s arthritis makes the compression of tight spaces painful and the aisle at least meant she could extend her right leg periodically.
The window seat was occupied.
The woman in the window seat was in her forties.
She was not in her window seat.
She had raised the armrest between the window seat and the middle seat, the armrest that existed to define the boundary between two paid spaces.
She had spread herself across both.
Her bag was on the seat.
Her jacket was on the seat.
She was, without apparent awareness of anyone else’s existence, using a space she had not paid for.
I said, as pleasantly as I could: excuse me. That’s my grandmother’s seat.
The woman did not look up from her phone.
She said: I’m comfortable like this.
I said: she has arthritis. She needs to be able to sit properly.
Still not looking up.
She said: I paid for my ticket. It’s not my problem if she needs extra space.
A flight attendant had appeared.
The flight attendant was young, professional, the specific professional of someone who has managed many variations of this situation.
She said, gently: ma’am, the other passenger needs her seat.
The woman sighed.
Audibly.
The sigh of someone for whom compliance is a great sacrifice.
She moved her bag.
She moved her jacket.
She stayed somewhat spread into the middle seat but at least the space was technically available.
I helped Rose into the seat.
This required some maneuvering.
The arthritis in her right hip meant that lowering herself required care.
It required a specific sequence of movements that she had learned and that I had learned alongside her.
She got into the seat.
There was less room than there should have been.
The woman’s elbow was in Rose’s space.
The woman’s presence was in Rose’s space in the particular way of someone who occupies more room than they have been allocated and who does so unconsciously and continuously.
The woman looked at Rose.
She looked at her the way people look when they are performing assessment.
Then she said: maybe people her age shouldn’t be traveling.
I cannot fully describe what it was like to hear this.
I am not usually a person who has trouble with words.
But there was a moment where the words simply were not available because the thing I had heard was so outside the territory of what I had expected a person to say to my grandmother.
My grandmother, who had been saving this trip in her heart for decades.
My grandmother, who was wearing the blue blouse with the small white flowers at the collar because she wanted to look right for the ocean.
My grandmother, who had said Edwin would have liked this one.
Rose’s hand found mine.
She was small.
She was eight-six and she had gotten smaller with the years, the specific physical diminishment that happens when bones lose density and posture changes.
Her hand was small and her grip was the grip of someone who has decided something.
She said: please, honey. Don’t let one rude person ruin our first vacation.
I looked at the woman.
The woman was back on her phone.
She had delivered her judgment and moved on.
She existed in the specific mode of someone for whom other people are not fully real.
I helped Rose adjust into the seat.
I put her carry-on in the overhead.
I made sure her seatbelt was accessible.
I told her I would check on her.
The flight attendant caught my eye and nodded.
I walked back to my seat.
My seat was seven rows back.
I sat down.
I was very angry.
Not the hot angry.
The cold angry, which is the more dangerous variety.
The cold angry that sits in your chest and doesn’t burn off.
I told myself: Rose asked me not to let it ruin the trip. Letting myself stay angry is letting it ruin the trip.
I did the breathing thing I had learned from a meditation app I had used exactly three times.
It helped approximately thirty percent.
The plane lifted.
The takeoff had the specific quality that takeoffs have, the acceleration and the noise and the moment of lift and then the change in the sound of everything as you leave the ground.
I watched out the window.
The city dropped away.
North Carolina from above.
The rivers and the roads and the green of the trees.
I thought: Rose is up here.
For the first time in her life, Rose is in the air.
I thought about her face watching the ground fall away.
I would have liked to have been beside her for that.
About five minutes after takeoff, I heard her voice.
Carrying back to me through the cabin, in the specific carrying way of older people’s voices.
She said: ma’am. Excuse me.
I went still.
No response from the woman.
Rose said: ma’am. Please, look down.
Then the woman said, loudly: how dare you. Leave me alone.
Rose said, and her voice was different now, it was the voice she used when she had decided something and had committed to the decision: you really need to look.
She said it with the firmness of someone who has been patient as a discipline and who is now choosing a different approach.
The woman said nothing but I heard a sound.
A shift of weight.
A chair moving.
Then I heard the woman make a sound.
Not a word.
A sound.
A very specific sound.
Rose turned around.
I could see her from seven rows back, the blue blouse, the white flowers at the collar.
She found my eyes.
She winked.
Rose does not wink.
In twenty-seven years, I had never seen Rose wink.
The wink was information.
Something was happening.
I had no idea what.
Then I heard the woman say, loudly, the loudly of someone who is not choosing their volume: what is that?
What is that?
The flight attendant appeared.
She moved toward Rose’s row with the speed of someone responding to something.
I heard Rose’s voice, very calm, saying: there’s no need to make a fuss.
The woman said: I am soaking wet. What did you do?
Her voice was the voice of someone who is genuinely distressed and who is also beginning to understand the dimensions of what has happened.
I unclipped my seatbelt.
I walked up the aisle.
The flight attendant reached the row just before I did.
I looked.
The woman was wet.
Not soaking entirely.
Significantly wet.
On her sleeve.
Her side.
Her lap.
Rose was sitting in her seat with her hands folded and her expression was the expression of a woman who has not done anything wrong.
This expression was entirely genuine.
On the tray table in front of Rose was a small paper cup.
The kind that comes from the little packets of drinks.
Empty now.
I said: Grandma.
She said: I had juice, Callie. You know I like juice when my sugar gets low.
She said it serenely.
She said it with the complete peace of someone who has made a sound factual statement.
The flight attendant looked at the empty cup.
She looked at the woman.
She looked at Rose.
She said, very carefully: ma’am, did the juice spill on you?
The woman said: she threw it at me.
Rose said: I had juice and then I didn’t have it anymore. You know how turbulence can be.
She said turbulence with the pronunciation of someone who has not said the word very many times but who has prepared it.
The flight attendant looked at me.
I looked at my grandmother.
Rose was looking straight ahead.
The profile of a small eighty-six-year-old woman in a blue blouse with white flowers at the collar who has never done anything to hurt another person in her life.
The flight attendant said, to the woman: I’m so sorry. Let me get you some paper towels.
She went.
The woman was a shade of red that I had not seen on a human face before.
She said: she did that on purpose.
Rose said: I had juice.
The woman said: you absolutely did that on purpose.
Rose turned and looked at her.
She said: I’ve been flying for the very first time and I’ve been trying to enjoy the experience despite not having the space I paid for. I had a small cup of juice because my blood sugar was getting low. The rest is between you and your conscience.
She said this with the complete dignity of someone who believes every word of it.
She said it with the specific dignity of someone who has been being dignified for eighty-six years and who has it exactly right.
The woman stared at her.
Rose turned back to the front.
She reached into her small bag and produced a package of crackers.
She opened the crackers.
She began eating them.
The woman, still red, said: you are unbelievable.
Rose said, to her crackers: I’m going to see the ocean for the first time in my life.
She said it without looking at the woman.
She said it the way you state a fact that is self-evidently more important than whatever else is being discussed.
She said: I’ve waited eighty-six years for this trip. I’m not going to let one rude person ruin it.
She said it to the crackers.
She said it like I had not been the one to say those words.
She said it like she had arrived at them herself.
The woman was silent.
The flight attendant came back with paper towels.
She helped the woman.
She looked at Rose again.
Rose smiled at her.
The smile of a woman who is very much enjoying a cup of juice and some crackers on her first airplane ride.
I went back to my seat.
I was vibrating with something that was not quite laughter and not quite awe and was probably some combination of both.
I thought about my grandmother.
Eighty-six years old.
Arthritis in both hips and her right shoulder.
On a plane for the first time.
Wearing the blue blouse.
Having been told that people her age shouldn’t be traveling.
Having watched me leave.
Having decided, in the five minutes after takeoff, exactly what she was going to do.
Not dramatic.
Not showy.
Not confrontational.
Just: juice.
Just: a small cup of juice and the acknowledgment that she had juice and then she didn’t.
Just: I’ve been flying for the very first time.
I thought about Edwin.
Edwin who had said he wanted to take her to see the ocean.
Edwin who would have been there beside her in the seat if the margins had materialized.
Edwin who was not here.
But Edwin who had raised her or helped raise her or loved her into the person who could sit in an airplane seat with arthritis in both hips, being told she was too old to travel, and come up with something that precise.
The flight landed two hours later.
We gathered our things.
The woman left without speaking.
She had been very quiet for the rest of the flight.
She had used a great many paper towels.
Rose and I walked off the plane together.
The Florida air hit us when we came through the airport doors and there was something in it, the quality of it, the humidity and the warmth and the specific smell of the south in a way that was not the same as North Carolina’s south.
Rose stopped.
She breathed.
She said: that’s different air.
I said: yes.
She said: is the ocean close?
I said: the hotel is twenty minutes.
She said: twenty minutes.
She said it the way you say something when you have been waiting for it for a long time and it is very close.
The hotel was everything I had worked for.
Not fancy.
Clean and well-positioned.
The rooms had views of the water.
I had specifically booked a room with a view of the water.
We checked in.
We took the elevator.
I had the key.
I opened the door.
I let Rose go in first.
She walked in.
She walked to the window.
Below was the pool.
Beyond the pool was the beach.
Beyond the beach was the Atlantic Ocean in the specific blue-green of Florida water, the blue-green that photographs try to capture and that is still somehow more when you are seeing it.
Rose put her hand on the glass.
She stood like that for a moment.
I stood in the doorway and watched her.
She was eighty-six years old and she had never seen the ocean and she was seeing it now.
Through a window.
In twenty minutes she would see it in person.
But right now she was seeing it through the window.
Her hand was on the glass.
She said, very quietly, not to me: Edwin.
She said it once.
Just that.
Just his name.
Then she turned around.
She was smiling.
Not the crying smile.
Just the smile.
The real one.
She said: let’s go down.
I said: let’s go down.
We went down.
We crossed the pool area.
We went through the gate to the beach.
The sand was warm.
The sound came before we could see the water properly, the specific constant sound of the ocean, the sound that people describe as waves but that is more than waves, that is the sound of something very large continuously doing what it does.
Rose stopped at the edge where the sand was firmer.
She looked out.
She stood for what was perhaps three minutes.
She did not speak.
I did not speak.
The ocean was doing what it always does, which is to be enormous and indifferent and somehow also the most specific thing in the world when you are standing in front of it.
Then she said: I understand now why Edwin wanted to bring me.
I said: yes.
She said: it’s. You can’t quite. There’s no word for it.
I said: no.
She said: Edwin would have said something poetic.
He would have.
Edwin was a reader.
A quiet man who kept a copy of something good in his shirt pocket.
He would have had the word.
She said: but I think he knew I needed to see it.
She said: I think he knew I was the kind of person who needed to see the ocean.
She said it like it was something she was just now learning about herself.
The specific thing that knowing the ocean does to you.
The way it rearranges the scale of things.
I said: yes.
I said: he was right about that.
She said: how did he know?
I said: because he knew you.
She said: yes.
She said: sixty-one years. He had time to learn me.
She said it with complete peace.
The peace of someone who has been loved for sixty-one years by someone who took the time to learn them.
She reached down.
She unlaced one shoe.
She took it off.
She unlaced the other.
She took it off.
She said: is it all right if I go in?
I said: yes.
She said: I want to feel it.
I said: of course.
I rolled up her pant legs.
Not because she couldn’t do it.
Because I wanted to be useful.
I wanted to be part of this.
She walked forward.
The water came.
It came over her feet.
She made a sound.
Not a word.
The specific sound of someone receiving something cold and real and unexpected in its fullness.
She said: oh.
Just that.
Oh.
She stood in the edge of the ocean.
The Atlantic, doing what it had been doing for longer than anyone could comprehend, touched the feet of an eighty-six-year-old woman from North Carolina who had waited her whole life for it.
She said: it’s cold.
I said: yes.
She said: and it keeps coming.
I said: yes.
She said: it doesn’t stop.
I said: no.
She said: it just keeps.
She watched the waves come in.
She watched them pull back.
She watched them come in again.
She said: I want to stay like this for a minute.
I said: take as long as you want.
I stood beside her.
The water came over my feet too.
We stood in it together.
The two of us.
Grandmother and granddaughter.
The ocean doing what it always does.
After a while she said: that woman on the plane.
I said: yes.
She said: people her age shouldn’t be traveling.
I said: yes.
She said: imagine.
I said: I know.
She said: imagine saying that to someone.
I said: I know.
She said: imagine what kind of life produces that.
She said it without anger.
With the specific quality of someone who is genuinely considering the question.
She said: she must be very unhappy.
I said: probably.
She said: or very afraid.
I said: maybe.
She said: people say things like that when they’re afraid, I think.
She said: afraid of getting old.
She said: afraid of not mattering.
She said: and so they try to make other people feel small.
She said: like that makes them bigger.
I said: Grandma.
She said: yes.
I said: you had juice.
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: I had juice.
She said it with the specific quality of something that is technically true.
Then she said: and I may have been a little careless about holding the cup.
I said: you may have been.
She said: very slightly inattentive.
I said: possibly.
She said: the turbulence was unexpected.
I said: there was no turbulence.
She said: well. You never know when turbulence might happen.
She said this serenely.
She said it to the ocean.
She said: I wanted her to know that we were here. That we were going to see the ocean. That she wasn’t going to ruin it.
She said: sometimes you have to make a point in the language available to you.
She said: juice was available to me.
I said: Grandma.
She said: don’t tell your mother.
I said: I was absolutely going to call her tonight.
She said: Callie.
She said my name the way she has always said it.
The whole person in it.
She said: let’s not. Just for now.
She said: just for now, let this be ours.
She reached out and took my hand.
She had always had a good grip.
Even now.
The arthritis in her hands but the grip underneath it still there.
She said: you did this for me.
She said it simply.
Not with the weight of an enormous statement.
With the specific weight of something true and small and enough.
She said: you saved up and you found the tickets and you brought me here.
She said: because you knew I had never seen it.
She said: because you knew Edwin had wanted to.
She said: because you are the kind of person who notices what people need and does something about it.
She said: I wonder where you learned that.
I said: I learned it from you.
She said: yes.
She said it without false modesty.
Without performance.
Just yes.
Yes, you did.
The ocean kept coming.
The light was changing the way it changes in the late afternoon, going gold the way light goes gold on the water.
Rose watched it.
I watched her watch it.
She said: when Edwin said he was going to take me.
She said: I used to picture it.
She said: what it would be like.
She said: I don’t know what I pictured exactly.
She said: I think I pictured something beautiful.
She said: but not this.
She said: you can’t picture this.
She said: you have to be here.
I said: yes.
She said: Edwin knew that.
She said: he knew you had to be here.
She said: he just couldn’t get us here.
She said: but you did.
She said: you got us here.
She squeezed my hand.
We stood in the ocean.
The two of us.
For a little while longer.
The sun went further down.
The water kept coming.
Rose said: I think I’d like to get some dinner.
I said: yes.
She said: somewhere with a view.
I said: I already looked.
She said: of course you did.
She said: you’re always looking.
She let go of my hand.
She walked back out of the water.
I picked up her shoes.
She waited while I dried her feet with the small towel I had thought to bring.
She put her shoes back on.
She looked at the ocean one more time.
She said: I’ll be back tomorrow.
She said it to the ocean.
Like a promise.
Like a plan.
Then she turned and we walked back toward the hotel, the two of us, the sand warm under our feet, the light golden, the sound of the water behind us.
That was the whole thing.
And it was everything.
