omeone kept ruining my freshly painted garage door just days before our neighborhood’s biggest competition. When I discovered who was behind it, I decided to give the judges a show they’d never forget.
The bottom half of my white garage door was covered in black paint.
I noticed it while taking out the trash before work on Friday morning. At first, I thought I was seeing things.
Then I walked closer and saw the thick, uneven strokes running across the panels.
“What happened?”
“Toby!” I shouted toward the house.
My husband appeared on the porch, still holding his coffee.
“What happened?”
I pointed at the garage.
“Who the hell would do something like this?”
“Probably teenagers.”
Toby stared for a moment, then sighed.
“Probably teenagers. You know how those kids from the high school get.”
He had a point. The school was only a few blocks away, and we’d occasionally found toilet paper in our trees or empty soda cans scattered across the lawn.
But this was different.
Someone had ruined it.
For months, I’d worked to make our house beautiful.
I’d planted roses and hydrangeas, trimmed the hedges until they were practically symmetrical, and decorated the porch with hanging flower baskets. Toby had repainted the garage door just three weeks earlier.
And now someone had ruined it.
But this was different.
What made it worse was that the annual neighborhood beautification competition was only days away.
I’d won last year, and I desperately wanted to win again.
The prize was a thousand-dollar gift certificate to the local garden center, but honestly, seeing my hard work recognized meant even more.
“Don’t worry,” Toby said, squeezing my shoulder. “We’ll fix it Saturday.”
“That’s awful.”
And we did. We spent practically the entire afternoon cleaning and repainting the door.
Our neighbor Kelsie stopped by while we were working.
“That’s awful,” she said. “Who would keep doing something like this?”
“I wish I knew.”
“And right before the judges come! Can you imagine if they’d seen it?”
Our garage looked perfect.
She shook her head sympathetically, and I thanked her for caring.
By evening, our garage looked perfect again.
But when I opened the curtains Sunday morning, my stomach dropped. The black paint was back.
I stood at the window, staring at the garage in disbelief.
“You have got to be kidding me!”
Kelsie shook her head.
Toby came running downstairs. When he saw the fresh black paint, his expression darkened.
“Okay. This isn’t some stupid teenage prank anymore.”
We spent the morning asking our neighbors whether they’d noticed anything unusual. Kelsie shook her head.
“Sorry, honey. I didn’t hear a thing. I wish I could help.”
John, who lived three houses down, said he’d been asleep all night.
“Sorry, honey.”
Joyce was practically furious on our behalf.
“You should call the police! People can’t just go around destroying someone’s property!”
Everyone seemed genuinely concerned, which somehow made the whole thing even more frustrating.
Toby and I repainted the garage again, but Monday morning brought the same ugly surprise.
“They’re watching us.”
For the third time, someone had covered our door in black paint.
“They’re watching us,” I told Toby. “They wait until we fix it, then come back.”
That afternoon, I ordered two security cameras with same-day delivery.
We installed them after dark, hiding one beneath the roofline facing the garage and another near the porch, overlooking the yard and street.
My phone buzzed.
We told absolutely nobody.
“Tomorrow morning we’ll finally meet our little artist,” Toby joked.
At 2:30 a.m., my phone buzzed.
Motion detected.
I opened the camera feed.
The image was grainy.
A figure in a dark hoodie was rolling black paint across our garage door.
Suddenly, the person stepped back, turned slightly, and pulled down the hood.
The image was grainy, but I recognized that hair. That jacket.
“No way…”
I raced downstairs.
The person stepped back.
I yanked open the front door just as the figure dropped the paint roller.
“Hey! Stop right there!”
The woman bolted between the houses, disappearing into the darkness before I even reached the driveway.
“I saw you!”
I turned toward him.
Toby appeared behind me, barefoot and half-asleep.
“What happened? Did you catch someone?”
I turned toward him.
“It was Kelsie.”
He blinked.
Every window was dark.
“Kelsie? Our Kelsie?”
“Yes! I saw her on the camera!”
Toby looked toward her house, where every window was dark.
“But she’s always been so nice to us.”
“Our Kelsie?”
“Apparently, she’s been nice enough to compliment our house while secretly destroying it!”
We hurried inside and replayed the footage.
Unfortunately, the picture wasn’t nearly as clear as I’d thought. When Kelsie turned toward the camera, the image blurred badly.
“You can’t really see her face,” Toby admitted.
He was right.
“I know what I saw.”
“I believe you, honey. But she’ll just deny it.”
He was right.
For a moment, I considered banging on her door. Instead, I decided I needed something she couldn’t explain away.
“She’ll just deny it.”
We returned to the driveway, where the abandoned roller and paint tray lay beside the garage.
I crouched down and examined the thick, glossy black paint.
Then an idea struck me.
“If someone keeps buying this stuff, somebody must remember selling it.”
I intended to find proof.
The next morning, I photographed the paint and drove to our neighborhood hardware store.
I intended to find proof against Kelsie.
I had absolutely no idea what I was about to discover.
The hardware store was a five-minute drive from our house. I’d been shopping there for years, and the owner, Frank, knew practically everyone in the neighborhood.
“I need your help.”
“Morning!” he greeted me. “Need more gardening supplies?”
“Actually, I need your help with something strange.”
I explained what had been happening and showed him the photograph of the black paint.
Frank studied it carefully.
He scratched his chin.
“Looks like heavy-duty exterior enamel. We carry that exact kind.”
“Has anyone bought it recently?”
He scratched his chin.
“Come to think of it, John bought a can just a few days ago.”
My stomach tightened.
I stared at him.
“John? From Maple Street?”
“That’s the one. Lives a few houses down from you, right?”
My stomach tightened.
“Joyce came in with him.”
John had personally assured us he’d been asleep during the vandalism.
“Anyone else?”
“Well, Joyce came in with him earlier this week. They spent ages looking at paint samples. I figured they were working on some neighborhood project.”
I thanked him and left, barely noticing the bell above the door.
“I paid attention to everything.”
Kelsie. John. Joyce.
Three people who’d stood in my driveway expressing sympathy.
Back home, I opened the security recordings again.
This time, I paid attention to everything except the faces.
I replayed the clips twice.
The person from the first night was tall and broad-shouldered, wearing heavy work boots.
The second figure was shorter, with a loose white shirt and sneakers.
And last night’s visitor had Kelsie’s familiar jacket.
I replayed the clips twice. Then I leaned back in my chair.
I sat at the table.
These weren’t random teenagers.
My neighbors had been taking turns vandalizing my garage.
The question was no longer who was doing it. It was why three seemingly friendly neighbors wanted my house ruined.
I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the three recordings.
I remembered a conversation.
Why would Kelsie, John, and Joyce do something like this?
Then I remembered a conversation with Kelsie a few weeks earlier.
“Winning twice in a row must be difficult,” she’d said. “People might start thinking nobody else has a chance.”
At the time, I’d laughed.
And Joyce…
Then there was John, who’d joked during a neighborhood barbecue that I should give someone else a turn at winning.
And Joyce… She’d casually asked whether the competition judges deducted points for damaged paintwork.
I felt my face grow hot.
“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
I pulled up the competition rules on my laptop.
I whispered.
The judges were arriving in two days. Exterior appearance, maintenance, and overall presentation were all part of the scoring.
A garage covered in black paint would certainly hurt my chances.
“They’re trying to make me lose,” I whispered.
Toby walked into the kitchen.
I caught his arm.
“Who’s trying to make you lose?”
I explained everything, showing him the recordings and telling him what Frank had said.
By the time I finished, Toby was furious.
“I’m going over there right now.”
I caught his arm.
Toby frowned.
“No.”
“They’ve been destroying our property!”
“They’ve already wasted three days of our lives. I’m not giving them the satisfaction of watching us beg them to stop.”
Toby frowned.
“So what are we supposed to do?”
I smiled.
I glanced through the window at our half-black garage.
Then, slowly, I smiled.
“I think we’re finally going to let them finish their masterpiece.”
Toby stared at me.
I closed my laptop.
“You’re joking.”
“Not even a little.”
I closed my laptop.
“We’re not repainting that garage again.”
And I already had an idea for what to do instead.
Perfect audience.
That afternoon, I stepped outside just as Kelsie was watering her flowers. John was tinkering with something near his driveway, while Joyce stood by her mailbox.
Perfect audience.
“Well,” I announced, loud enough for everyone to hear, “Toby and I decided we’re done repainting the garage.”
Kelsie immediately turned off her hose.
John straightened up.
“Oh, honey. That’s such a shame, especially with the competition coming up.”
I sighed dramatically.
“I suppose there’s no point trying to win anymore. We’ll just leave it the way it is.”
John straightened up.
I watched their faces.
“Probably for the best. These competitions aren’t worth getting upset over.”
“There’s always next year,” Joyce added cheerfully.
I watched their faces.
Kelsie looked positively delighted. John suddenly seemed interested in his tools, while Joyce couldn’t quite suppress her smile.
“Probably for the best.”
They were terrible actors.
“Well, if there’s anything I can do,” Kelsie offered, “I could bring over some cookies.”
“Actually, I was thinking of inviting everyone over half an hour before the judging starts. Just a little get-together to celebrate the neighborhood.”
Toby was waiting.
The three exchanged surprised glances. Then Kelsie beamed.
“What a wonderful idea!”
I smiled and headed inside.
Toby was waiting by the kitchen window.
“Not exactly.”
“You’re really throwing a party for the people who vandalized our garage?”
“Not exactly,” I replied, slipping off my shoes. “I’m giving them front-row seats.”
On the morning of the competition, Toby found me in the kitchen, checking the time.
“Remind me why we’re inviting these people over again?”
I laughed.
“Because I need them all in one place.”
“That sounds like something a movie villain would say.”
I laughed and handed him a plate of sandwiches.
“Just keep everyone entertained for a while. I have a few things to take care of.”
“What things?”
“You’ll see.”
Kelsie arrived first.
Toby narrowed his eyes.
“I’ve been married to you for fifteen years. That answer usually means trouble.”
“Then you know better than to ask questions.”
Half an hour before the judges were due, our doorbell rang.
I welcomed everyone.
Kelsie arrived first, carrying a plate of cookies. John followed with a bottle of lemonade, and Joyce appeared with a bowl of fruit salad.
I welcomed everyone, exchanged a few pleasantries, then glanced at my watch.
“Excuse me. I just need to finish some preparations.”
I caught Toby’s eye before slipping away.
“Toby, don’t be ridiculous.”
He understood his assignment.
“So!” he announced, clapping his hands. “Who wants to place bets on how many points we’ll lose for our garage?”
Kelsie gave an uncomfortable laugh. “Oh, Toby, don’t be ridiculous.”
“I’m serious. Personally, I’m hoping they’ll appreciate the modern art. Very bold. Very mysterious.”
John chuckled. “Maybe you’ll start a trend.”
“I’m serious.”
“Wonderful,” Toby replied. “Next year, I’ll paint the whole house. Save everyone the trouble of judging.”
Joyce nearly choked on her lemonade.
For the next twenty minutes, Toby kept the conversation going, offering sandwiches and making increasingly ridiculous suggestions for future home improvements.
I glanced through the window.
By the time I returned, Kelsie was laughing at his proposal to replace our lawn with artificial grass and plastic flamingos.
Then a car pulled up outside.
I glanced through the window and smiled.
“Perfect timing. The judges are here.”
The three judges stepped out of their car, carrying clipboards and smiling politely.
Our neighbors followed.
“Welcome!” I called, walking down the driveway.
Our neighbors followed behind me, still chatting about Toby’s ridiculous landscaping ideas.
The judges began with my flower beds, admiring the roses and hydrangeas I’d spent months tending.
“These are beautiful,” one woman said. “And your hedges are remarkably neat.”
Everyone laughed.
“Thank you. My husband says I spend more time with them than I do with him.”
“Because they listen better!” Toby added.
Everyone laughed.
Then we reached the garage. The judges stopped.
Its bottom half was still covered in ugly black paint, contrasting horribly with the clean white panels above.
I smiled pleasantly.
One judge raised an eyebrow.
“That’s certainly an interesting design choice.”
Behind him, Kelsie pressed her lips together, barely containing her smile. John suddenly became fascinated with the flowers, while Joyce exchanged a knowing glance with Kelsie.
I smiled pleasantly.
Joyce exchanged a knowing glance.
“Thank you. It’s actually part of a larger neighborhood art project.”
The judges looked intrigued.
“An art project?”
“Oh, yes. Quite a few people contributed.”
I glanced toward my neighbors.
“Shall we continue?”
Kelsie’s smile faltered.
“You’ll understand when you see the rest,” I assured the judges.
Then I gestured down the street.
“Shall we continue? There’s something I’d love to show you at John’s house.”
For the first time that morning, John stopped smiling.
The judge chuckled.
As we approached John’s house, one of the judges suddenly stopped.
“What’s that?”
Beside the sidewalk stood a decorative weather-vane display. Hanging from it was a work boot, completely covered in black paint.
“Well, that’s certainly creative,” the judge chuckled.
“How strange.”
John went pale.
I turned toward him with my sweetest smile.
“John, would you like to explain the inspiration?”
“I… I don’t know where that came from!”
“Really? How strange. Well, let’s keep going.”
Joyce gasped.
At Joyce’s house, another surprise awaited us.
A scarecrow stood beside her garden, with a carved pumpkin for a head and a white shirt covered in black paint.
Joyce gasped.
“That’s my shirt!”
I raised my eyebrows.
“Really? How interesting.”
“Why does it have my clothes?”
“How interesting.”
“Oh, I found that shirt near my garage. I figured it deserved a proper display.”
The judges exchanged bewildered glances.
Kelsie had stopped smiling altogether.
Finally, we reached her house, where I’d arranged a projector and portable screen.
“What is going on?” Kelsie demanded.
I pressed play.
“I thought the judges deserved to see the full neighborhood collaboration.”
I pressed play.
The first clip showed a tall figure painting my garage. The next showed someone losing a boot while fleeing.
Then came a shorter figure abandoning a white shirt.
I paused the recording.
Finally, Kelsie appeared, rolling black paint across my door before pulling back her hood.
I paused the recording.
“For three nights, these people worked very hard to make sure my house wouldn’t look its best today.”
Kelsie crossed her arms.
“That proves absolutely nothing!”
John suddenly blurted out, “You said the cameras were fake!”
It was too late.
Everyone turned toward him.
Joyce threw up her hands.
“Kelsie told us nobody would ever find out!”
“Will you two shut up?” Kelsie snapped.
But it was too late.
Kelsie opened her mouth.
John started blaming Joyce. Joyce insisted the entire scheme had been Kelsie’s idea.
The judges listened in astonishment as the three practically confessed everything.
Finally, the head judge raised his hand.
“That’s enough. Deliberately sabotaging another contestant is unacceptable. All three of you are disqualified.”
Kelsie opened her mouth to protest.
“That’s enough.”
“Unless,” he added, “you’d prefer we discuss this with the police.”
For once, Kelsie had absolutely nothing to say.
