My crooked clay bowl collapsed just as Roslin showed me a photo from Sheldon’s bachelor party. One look told me the man I’d trusted for seven years had planned more than drinks with his friends. Then a video arrived, and before the club closed, I made two changes to the future he’d expected to have.
“That bowl looks like it’s trying to escape.”
Roslin leaned over my shoulder, examining the clay wobbling beneath my hands.
“It’s abstract.”
“It’s leaning, Keira.”
“That’s part of the abstraction.”
“It’s abstract.”
My sister laughed so hard she nearly knocked over her own bowl.
There were six of us at the pottery studio, drinking sparkling lemonade and making objects that would probably never survive a dishwasher.
It was exactly the bachelorette party I’d wanted.
There were six of us at the pottery studio.
Sheldon had chosen something considerably louder.
A private room at a downtown club, expensive drinks, and enough friends to fill a small wedding.
“You only say goodbye to the single life once,” he’d told me.
“You’re not dying.”
“After this, I’ll just be another boring husband.”
I’d laughed.
“After this, I’ll just be another boring husband.”
Sheldon loved an audience. He’d been that way since college.
I preferred quiet evenings and restaurants where I could hear the person sitting opposite me.
For seven years, I’d believed we made room for both.
Roslin’s phone buzzed.
She wiped clay from her fingers and checked it.
Sheldon loved an audience.
Her smile disappeared.
“Keira…”
“Yeah?”
She stared at the screen.
Then she caught my wrist.
“Don’t move.”
“Why?”
She turned the phone toward me.
She stared at the screen.
A message from her husband read:
“Does your sis know about this?”
Below it was a photograph.
Sheldon.
My Sheldon.
Standing beneath purple club lights, kissing a woman with long dark hair.
Below it was a photograph.
His hand was tangled in her hair.
I looked at the picture for several seconds.
“Is that tonight?”
Roslin nodded.
Her husband was one of Sheldon’s groomsmen.
“Maybe there’s some explanation,” I said.
His hand was tangled in her hair.
I hated hearing myself say it.
Then another message arrived.
A video.
Roslin pressed play.
Sheldon stood with a drink in one hand and his other arm around the same woman.
“Marriage is a leash, man,” he announced.
Roslin pressed play.
His friends laughed.
“How am I supposed to give all this up for my boring wife?”
He raised his glass.
Then he kissed the woman again.
This time, he took her hand and walked away with her.
He kissed the woman again.
Someone behind the camera shouted something I couldn’t make out.
The video ended.
My hands were covered in wet clay.
I stared at them because I didn’t know what else to look at.
Seven years.
Our wedding was three weeks away.
I didn’t know what else to look at.
I’d picked up his altered suit that morning.
Roslin took the phone from my hand.
“Honey, let’s go home.”
I shook my head.
“Not yet.”
“Keira.”
“Can you ask him something?”
“Who?”
“Your husband.”
“Can you ask him something?”
She sent a message.
A reply came almost immediately.
Roslin read it twice.
“What?” I asked.
“He says Sheldon was talking to that woman earlier. Before everyone started drinking.”
“Talking how?”
“Sheldon was talking to that woman earlier.”
“He’d been flirting with her. Apparently he told a couple of the guys not to mention her to you.”
I looked toward the pottery wheel.
My bowl had collapsed on one side.
Sheldon hadn’t stumbled into a kiss he regretted.
He’d made room for it.
“He’d been flirting with her.”
Roslin touched my arm.
“Come on. I’ll drive.”
I nodded.
Then I looked at her.
“Are you with me?”
“Of course.”
“Good. Because I’m not going home.”
“Are you with me?”
Roslin studied me for a moment.
“Please tell me you’re not planning to throw pottery at him.”
“No.”
“That’s disappointing.”
I laughed once.
While Roslin collected our bags, I stepped outside and made my first call.
“That’s disappointing.”
The club answered after several rings.
I asked for the duty manager.
Earlier that month, I’d booked Sheldon a surprise late-night extension in the club’s VIP room.
He’d already arranged the main party and agreed to cover the bar tab himself.
I asked for the duty manager.
I’d paid the original room deposit as my contribution.
The extra time was my gift.
I’d wanted him to have a wonderful night.
Now I wanted to know whether I could cancel it.
The manager checked my booking reference.
The extra time was my gift.
“The main booking ends in half an hour,” she said. “Your extension was supposed to begin immediately afterward. Under the cancellation terms, we can still remove it, but there will be a fee.”
“That’s fine.”
“The main booking ends in half an hour.”
“The main party will continue until its scheduled end. After that, his group will need to leave the VIP room. Any outstanding charges remain the responsibility of the person running that tab.”
“Understood.”
“Would you like me to cancel your extension?”
“His group will need to leave the VIP room.”
“Yes, please.”
She confirmed it.
Then I made the second call.
Our wedding venue had an after-hours number for clients.
I reached the coordinator who’d spent six months helping me choose linens and argue with Sheldon about chair covers.
I made the second call.
“Keira? Is everything all right?”
“No.”
I explained that I needed to discuss canceling the wedding.
She went quiet.
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“I need to know what paperwork is required.”
I needed to discuss canceling the wedding.
She explained the deposit we’d lose and which contracts would need separate attention.
I listened.
Then I said, “Send me the cancellation documents.”
“Are you sure?”
I looked through the pottery studio window.
Roslin was inside, carefully putting my crooked bowl on a drying shelf.
“Absolutely.”
“Send me the cancellation documents.”
When I returned, she held up my car keys.
“Phone?”
“Here.”
“Bag?”
“Got it.”
“Any chance you’ll reconsider the pottery-throwing rule?”
“None.”
“Shame.”
We left.
“Any chance you’ll reconsider the pottery-throwing rule?”
During the drive, I watched the video again.
Roslin didn’t tell me to stop.
She just drove.
Sheldon had called me boring.
That was what kept catching me.
Not because I’d secretly wanted to become a woman who enjoyed nightclubs.
I didn’t.
Sheldon had called me boring.
I liked bookstores, old movies, and spending Sunday mornings in pajamas.
Sheldon knew that.
He used to say my quiet evenings made him feel like he could finally sit still.
Apparently, he’d been telling other people a different story.
Sheldon knew that.
When we reached the club, Roslin parked across the street.
Music thudded through the building’s front doors.
People waited for rideshares along the curb.
Roslin glanced at me.
“You don’t have to talk to him tonight. You can go home.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have to talk to him tonight.”
“Then why are we here?”
I looked at the doors.
“Because I want to see whether he thinks this is funny when I’m standing in front of him.”
We didn’t wait long.
A man came outside, laughing into his phone.
Then two more.
We didn’t wait long.
Finally, the doors flew open.
“KEIRA!”
Sheldon stumbled onto the sidewalk.
His friends crowded behind him.
Not one stepped forward when he turned toward them.
He wore a white satin sash.
His friends crowded behind him.
Across it, in enormous gold letters:
LAST NIGHT OF FREEDOM
A plastic crown sat crookedly on his head.
I’d seen that ridiculous package on the club’s website weeks earlier.
Sheldon had insisted on ordering it.
A plastic crown sat crookedly on his head.
“You’re going to look like a discount beauty queen,” I’d told him.
“That’s the point.”
He’d been delighted.
He wasn’t delighted now.
“What did you do?” he demanded.
He wasn’t delighted now.
I looked at the sash.
“I stopped paying for your freedom.”
A couple waiting nearby turned around.
One man read the sash aloud.
“Last Night of Freedom.”
I looked at the sash.
His companion looked from Sheldon to me.
“Looks like he got his wish.”
A few people laughed. Another couple slowed as they passed, read the sash, and started laughing too. Sheldon noticed them staring.
A few people laughed.
He grabbed the sash and tried to pull it over his head.
It caught on the plastic crown.
Roslin turned away, pressing her lips together.
“Not helping,” I whispered.
“I’m trying.”
It caught on the plastic crown.
Sheldon finally yanked the crown free.
“Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?”
“Actually, yes.”
His friends had followed him outside. Roslin’s husband wasn’t among them; he’d texted that he was staying clear of Sheldon.
Roslin’s husband wasn’t among them.
One asked whether the VIP extension was really canceled.
Another muttered something about the remaining tab.
Sheldon rounded on them.
“Can you give us a minute?”
They exchanged looks.
Then they drifted toward the curb.
The VIP extension was canceled.
No one offered to cover his bill.
No one defended him.
Sheldon turned back to me.
“Why would you cancel the room?”
“Because I booked it.”
“It was supposed to be a surprise.”
“It was.”
No one defended him.
“Keira, you’re acting crazy.”
I took out my phone.
“Do you recognize this woman?”
I showed him the photograph.
He stopped talking.
For a moment, he simply stared.
He stopped talking.
Then he looked toward Roslin.
“Who sent you that?”
“Does it matter?”
“One of the guys?”
I played the video.
His own voice spilled onto the sidewalk.
Marriage is a leash, man.
“Who sent you that?”
Sheldon reached for the phone.
I moved it away.
“Don’t.”
He glanced around.
“Can we talk somewhere private?”
“You weren’t worried about privacy earlier.”
“Keira…”
“Was it funny?”
“You weren’t worried about privacy earlier.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“It was a bachelor party.”
“I know where you were.”
“We were drinking.”
“I saw the video.”
“Nothing happened.”
I looked at him.
“You kissed her twice in the evidence I have.”
“I saw the video.”
He glanced at the screen.
“That doesn’t mean anything else happened.”
I wasn’t going to argue about what I hadn’t seen.
“What I saw was enough.”
He took a step closer.
“Come on. You know what I’m like.”
I did.
“What I saw was enough.”
I knew he liked crowded rooms.
He hated leaving parties early.
He could turn a trip to buy milk into an hour-long conversation with a stranger.
I’d never believed any of that meant he’d betray me.
“You know I don’t mean half the stuff I say when I’m out,” he continued.
He hated leaving parties early.
“Which half was I supposed to ignore?”
He looked toward the club.
“The guys were joking around.”
“You called me your boring wife.”
“I was playing it up for them.”
“And the woman?”
“You called me your boring wife.”
“Keira, please.”
“Did you plan to meet her tonight?”
He didn’t answer.
Roslin’s husband had already told us enough.
Sheldon glanced toward his friends.
“I wasn’t thinking.”
He didn’t answer.
“You were thinking when you told them not to mention her to me.”
He looked back sharply.
“Who said that?”
I slipped my phone into my bag.
“You keep asking the wrong question.”
He held out both hands.
“Look, I messed up. Fine. I admit it.”
“You keep asking the wrong question.”
I waited.
“But you can’t throw away seven years over one night.”
I stared at him.
Seven years.
He said it as though we’d both contributed to a savings account and I was trying to steal his half.
“You were counting on those seven years, weren’t you?”
I stared at him.
The color drained out of his cheeks.
“Exactly. That’s what I’m saying.”
He stepped closer, encouraged.
“We’ve been together since college. You know me better than anyone. We can’t just end everything because I got carried away.”
The color drained out of his cheeks.
I looked at the crown dangling from his fingers.
“You wanted one last night of freedom.”
“That’s just a saying.”
“You said it yourself.”
“Keira… babe…”
“Enjoy it.”
“You said it yourself.”
I turned toward Roslin’s car.
Sheldon followed us a few steps.
“Wait. What does that mean?”
I stopped.
“The venue is sending me the cancellation paperwork.”
He stared.
“What venue?”
“The venue is sending me the cancellation paperwork.”
“Our wedding venue.”
For the first time all evening, he seemed to forget about the people watching.
“You’re not serious.”
“I am.”
“Keira, we need to talk about this.”
“We just did.”
“You’re not serious.”
“You can’t cancel our wedding over a party.”
I looked at the sash still hanging across his chest.
“It wasn’t the party.”
Roslin opened the passenger door.
I got in.
“It wasn’t the party.”
Sheldon stood on the sidewalk, holding his plastic crown and watching us through the windshield.
He’d spent the evening celebrating a freedom he thought would end at midnight.
I watched him shrink in the side mirror as Roslin pulled away.
My phone began ringing before we’d reached the next intersection.
I let it ring.
He’d spent the evening celebrating freedom.
Roslin glanced at me.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
She nodded and kept driving.
A few minutes later, I opened the email from our wedding coordinator.
The cancellation fee was listed near the top.
“Are you okay?”
It was a lot of money.
Enough to make me sit very still.
Roslin noticed.
“Want me to look?”
I read the amount aloud.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
It was a lot of money.
“We’ll figure out the practical stuff tomorrow.”
I looked at the amount again.
The next morning, I signed the venue’s cancellation form.
We lost the deposit.
I canceled the vendors booked under my name and began sorting the shared expenses.
We lost the deposit.
Sheldon called while I was reviewing the florist’s contract.
“Did you really cancel it?”
“Yes.”
“My parents already booked their flights.”
“So?”
“What am I supposed to tell everyone?”
“The truth.”
“Did you really cancel it?”
“You could’ve talked to me first.”
I looked at the photograph Roslin had sent.
“About which part?”
He went quiet.
I ended the call.
“You could’ve talked to me first.”
That afternoon, I found our seating chart beneath a stack of wedding invitations.
I’d spent an entire Saturday arranging Sheldon’s friends together.
He’d promised to help.
Then he’d gone out.
When he came home, he kissed my forehead.
“You’re better at this stuff.”
He’d promised to help.
I’d taken it as a compliment.
Now I remembered how he’d walked past the unfinished invitations without asking whether I needed anything.
I folded the chart and put it with the cancellation paperwork.
Three days later, Roslin accompanied me to collect my pottery.
The fired bowl leaned noticeably to one side.
I’d taken it as a compliment.
Roslin turned it around.
“Well, nobody’s going to mistake that for a wedding present.”
I laughed.
“It’s supposed to look like that.”
“Sure it is.”
At home, I placed it on the counter.
“Sure it is.”
My phone buzzed.
Sheldon wanted to know when he could collect the clothes he’d left at my apartment.
I replied with a time when Roslin could be there.
Then I set the phone facedown.
I replied with a time when Roslin could be there.
I took my keys from my pocket and dropped them into the bowl.
They slid against its crooked side and settled.
I nudged the bowl an inch away from the counter’s edge.
It stayed there.
I took my keys from my pocket and dropped them into the bowl.
