She walked past me and stopped directly in front of Walter.
“I never broke my promise,” she said.

The moment Walter saw what was inside, he lowered himself into the nearest chair and covered his face.

I knocked, and Gran opened the door almost immediately.

I laughed as Gran turned me around and fixed a piece of my hair.

Then I stepped aside.
“Gran, this is Walter. Walter, this is my gran, Penny.”
Walter moved into the doorway.
“Oh, sweetheart. You look like a dream!”
“Good evening, ma’am.”
Gran looked at him.
Her smile vanished.
“Gran?”
She didn’t answer.
Five minutes later, the wicker basket sat open between us.
“Gran?”
Walter stared at the envelopes inside.
“What is this?”
Gran lifted the top one.
His name was written across the front.
Walter’s hand shook as he took it.
“Rose?”
Gran sat opposite him.

I moved closer.

Walter looked at the basket, then at Gran.

“More than 60 years.”

He held out his hand for his cane.

He looked at my dress.
“You have a prom to get to.”
“It’s okay, Walter. We can stay.”

“Gran hasn’t explained.”
He swallowed.
“If I hear the rest now, I won’t make it through that door.”
I handed him his cane.
“Then we go.”

Before we left, I looked back at Gran.

And I knew we weren’t done with it.
Ben took one look at us when we got back into the car and kept his questions to himself.
I turned toward Walter.
“We don’t have to go.”

Three days after prom, I found the wicker basket untouched on the table in Walter’s room.

“Then you’ll finally know what she wanted you to know.”

“You’re 18. You think answers fix everything.”
“No, I don’t. I just think that knowing the answers will help you decide what to do next.”
He looked at me.
“I think Rose wrote those letters because she wanted you to read them someday.”
Walter shook his head.
His eyes dropped again.
“I don’t know if I can do that alone.”
“You don’t have to.”
That afternoon, I called Gran.
Two days later, I brought her with me.
Walter noticed her looking at the framed photo on his nightstand.

“Her name was Ellen.”
Gran stepped closer.

“She was, for 48 years.”
Gran smiled.

“Rose got very sick while you were overseas.”
Gran’s voice tightened.
“My mother decided you had enough to carry. You were overseas, Walter. She thought you already had enough to worry about. But every time Rose handed her another letter, she promised she’d mail it.”
“Otherwise, I would’ve sent them myself.”
Walter stared at her.
“So Rose thought I was reading them.”
“Yes.”
“And when I didn’t answer?”
“She thought something had happened to you.”
Walter gripped the arm of his chair.

“No. It wasn’t.”
“Did Rose ever find out?”
“Not while she was still writing.”

“She kept believing one of those letters would bring you back.”

“I was younger. I didn’t know what Mom had done until after Rose died.”
Walter’s face tightened.
“Then what?”
“I confronted her.”

Walter gave a short, bitter laugh.
“By letting us believe we’d abandoned each other?”
Gran nodded.
“I told her protection wasn’t supposed to steal someone else’s choice.”
I watched Gran’s hands tighten around each other.

“What did you do after that?” I asked.
“I tried to find you. I wrote to your last address and asked around.”
Walter looked up.
“You looked for me?”
“Of course I did.”
Gran touched the basket.
“You looked for me?”
“Nothing came back except my own letter. Then our family moved, and eventually I lost the trail.”
Walter sat quietly.
“So you kept everything.”
“I promised Rose that if you ever came back, I’d tell you she never stopped caring.”
He looked at the letters.
“You did. You kept that promise, Penny.”
“It took 60 years.”
“So you kept everything.”
Then Walter opened the first letter.
He read several before reaching the last one.
His hands trembled as he unfolded it.
Finally, Walter looked toward the photograph of his late wife, Ellen.
“Rose didn’t ask me to wait.”
Gran covered her mouth.

“She wanted me to come home. She wanted me to build a life. Love someone. Have a family.”

Gran laughed softly.

Walter reached across the table.

I turned.

I walked back and looked at the photo. Walter was smiling beside me, not like someone borrowing a night from his past, but like someone finally standing inside his own life again.
“That’s a great photo, Walter,” I said.
