d given up a vacation and even dental treatment because my husband said family came first. Then one small discovery changed everything. Instead of exposing him, I started planning a surprise he wouldn’t forget.
I’m Sarah, thirty, and I’ve been married to Nolan, a thirty-three-year-old IT guy, for five years.
We had a modest house, shared finances, and a pretty good marriage.
I handled our bills and savings. Nolan rarely checked our accounts unless he wanted to buy something.
Except when it came to his obsession with expensive electronics.
“Sarah, look at this computer!”
A pretty good marriage.
“Another one? Didn’t Apple release something last month?”
“This one’s different!”
“Does it make breakfast?”
“It’s incredibly powerful. I could start taking freelance projects.”
“You’ve been saying that for three years.”
Obsession with expensive electronics.
“This time I’m serious.”
“So is our vacuum. You should try it.”
Nolan laughed, his eyes still glued to the screen.
After six months of helping his mother, Nolan’s obsession with another expensive computer irritated me.
It had started when he told me my mother-in-law, Linda, was struggling financially.
“Mom’s moving in with Aunt Carol,” he explained. “She can’t afford her place anymore.”
I could start taking freelance projects.
“Is she okay?”
“She’s embarrassed. I promised we’d help.”
“Of course. How much?”
“Fifteen hundred monthly, temporarily.”
I agreed immediately. Linda had always treated me kindly.
Nolan’s obsession with expensive computer irritated me.
Then Nolan asked for another three thousand from our savings.
“That’s our vacation money.”
“Family comes first.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll cancel our vacation,” I said.
“And the dentist?”
Linda had always treated me kindly.
“I’ll postpone it.”
“Good. We need to be responsible.”
Two weeks later, he bought expensive wireless earbuds.
“Seriously?”
“They’re essential for work.”
I’ll cancel our vacation.
“Apparently, your meetings require jewelry.”
I laughed nervously.
Nolan laughed too.
“See? You understand.”
He always mistook my laughter for agreement.
They’re essential for work.
By the sixth month, we’d supposedly given Linda twelve thousand dollars.
“Are you buying anything for yourself?” my friend asked.
“Not this month. We’re helping Linda.”
“Still? You’ve skipped our last three dinners!”
“Family comes first,” I repeated.
He mistook my laughter for agreement.
Then Nolan came home from the gym furious. “I lost my left earbud!”
“Did you check the tracking app?”
“It’s probably dead. I’ll buy another.”
“Those things cost a fortune!”
“Sarah, it’s one earbud.”
Family comes first.
“Then let me find it.”
“Fine. I’m taking a shower.”
I grabbed our shared iPad. All our devices were linked to one family account.
The map loaded.
A blue dot appeared twenty minutes away, in a residential neighborhood.
Let me find it.
Not even close to the gym.
I zoomed in on a large private house and took a screenshot.
Me: Found your earbud.
Nolan: Please tell me you aren’t driving there 😅️️️️️️
Me: Should I?
Not even close to the gym.
Nolan: NO! Wait until I’m out of the shower. I’ll explain 💋️️️️️️
Explain what?
I grabbed my keys.
Nolan called three times during the drive.
I ignored him.
Please tell me you aren’t driving there.
Twenty minutes later, I pulled up outside an impressive house.
“That can’t be right,” I muttered, checking the address again.
Same location.
Then I noticed a familiar car in the driveway.
Whatever was behind that door, I wasn’t prepared for it.
I walked up and knocked.
I ignored him.
A moment later, Linda opened it wearing gardening gloves.
“Sarah? What are you doing here?”
“I tracked Nolan’s earbud here.”
“Oh! He left it yesterday.”
“Yesterday? Nolan said you were living with Aunt Carol!”
I wasn’t prepared for it.
My mother-in-law blinked. “Why would I? I live here!”
I’d spent six months helping my mother-in-law.
Now I was beginning to wonder who I’d really been helping.
“Come inside, sweetheart.”
I followed her into a beautiful living room.
I live here!
“Since when do you live here?”
“Three weeks! Nolan was supposed to keep it secret. Cousin Margaret left me an inheritance, and I sold my old house.”
“Weren’t you living with Aunt Carol?”
“Only while I was selling. Why?”
“Nolan said you couldn’t afford your own place.”
Who I’d really been helping?
Linda frowned. “I sold it for a very good price!”
“Wonderful,” I repeated weakly.
“Would you like coffee?”
“Linda, why was Nolan here?”
“He helped connect my television yesterday. Honestly, technology hates me.”
Nolan was supposed to keep it secret.
“And he left his earbud?”
“Oh, right! I put it somewhere safe.”
She retrieved it from a side table.
I stared at the tiny white object.
“Linda, are you having financial problems?”
Honestly, technology hates me.
“Good heavens, no. I just bought a house!”
“Then why have we sent you twelve thousand dollars?”
Her smile vanished.
“What?!?”
“Nolan said you needed fifteen hundred a month.”
“Fifteen hundred? For what?”
I just bought a house!
“And another three thousand from our savings.”
Linda stared. “He told you I needed all that money?”
“Yes. I even canceled our vacation.”
“Sarah, I never asked him for a penny!”
“I postponed my dental treatment, too.”
You needed fifteen hundred a month.
“You what?”
“Nolan said we couldn’t afford it.”
Linda’s face turned crimson.
“Yet he could afford those ridiculous headphones?”
I started laughing.
I never asked him for a penny!
It was that awful, uncontrollable laughter that appeared whenever I wanted to scream.
“What’s funny?”
“Apparently, I’ve been supporting a woman who didn’t even know she needed help.”
She didn’t laugh. “That son of mine has some explaining to do.”
I stood. “Not yet.”
Linda’s face turned crimson.
“Sarah…”
“Please. I need to understand where the money went.”
She studied me.
Then nodded. “Call me when you know.”
I knew Nolan had lied. Now I wanted to see how far he’d take it.
She didn’t even know she needed help.
Nolan was waiting by the door. “You went to Mom’s?”
“Beautiful house. Does she still need financial help?”
“Unfortunately. The repairs are expensive.”
“How unfortunate.”
“But things should improve soon.”
I wanted to see how far he’d take it.
I smiled. “That’s reassuring.”
He relaxed and kissed my forehead.
“Dinner?” I asked, resisting the urge to push him away.
That night, I barely slept.
The next morning, I checked our bank records.
Things should improve soon.
Every payment supposedly meant for Linda had gone into Nolan’s personal account.
Twelve thousand dollars.
Gambling? Secret debts?
Then I opened our shared shopping account.
And there was my answer.
I checked our bank records.
Apple computer. Custom configuration. $12,000.
Delivery scheduled for the following week.
My dental treatment. Our canceled vacation. Six months of sacrifices.
All for a computer.
“Oh, Nolan,” I muttered. “You’re going to regret this.”
Gambling? Secret debts?
I called Linda.
“Remember those twelve thousand dollars?”
“Unfortunately. Did you find them?”
“Your son bought himself a computer.”
“A computer? For twelve thousand dollars?”
“Custom configuration. Apparently, the regular ones aren’t expensive enough.”
You’re going to regret this.
“That little… And you postponed your dental treatment for this?”
“Every appointment.”
“Sarah, come over. Right now.”
“Already getting my shoes.”
When Linda saw the receipt, she didn’t ask whether we should confront Nolan.
She asked how badly I wanted him to remember this.
The regular ones aren’t expensive enough.
“He used my name!”
“And my salary.”
“What do you want to do?”
“Get my money back. And teach him a lesson.”
“Go on.”
How badly I wanted him to remember this?
“He thinks his computer arrives Friday. What if he gets exactly what he deserves instead?”
I explained my plan.
Linda burst out laughing. “Sarah, that’s beautiful!”
“Not one word to Nolan.”
“Darling, I keep secrets better than he keeps earbuds.”
Teach him a lesson.
Over the next several days, Nolan became unusually cheerful.
At dinner, he kept checking his phone.
“Expecting something?” I asked.
“Just work stuff.”
“Another expensive gadget?”
I keep secrets better than he keeps earbuds.
He nearly choked. “Why would you say that?”
“Because I know you.”
A few days before delivery, I suggested taking Friday off.
“We could cook something special. Steak, potatoes, your favorite dessert.”
Nolan checked his calendar. “Friday works perfectly.”
Nolan became unusually cheerful.
“Great. We’ll stay home all day.”
He smiled. “Sounds perfect.”
I smiled back.
Nolan thought Friday would be the day his dream finally arrived.
I knew it would be the day he learned what his dream had cost me.
Friday works perfectly.
Friday morning, Nolan practically bounced downstairs.
“You’re cheerful,” I remarked.
“Can’t a man enjoy his day off?”
“Absolutely.”
By afternoon, we’d started cooking. Nolan chopped vegetables while I prepared the sauce, though he seemed more interested in the street outside.
He learned what his dream had cost me.
“Expecting company?” I asked.
“No. Just appreciating the neighborhood.”
“How romantic.”
At four thirty, the doorbell rang.
Nolan froze.
Can’t a man enjoy his day off?
I smiled. “Honey, I think that’s for you.”
He practically sprinted toward the door.
A delivery driver stood outside holding a large cardboard box.
“Delivery for Nolan?”
“That’s me!”
I think that’s for you.
“Sign here.”
Nolan signed so quickly he nearly dropped the pen.
He carried the box inside like a newborn baby.
“What’s that?” I asked innocently.
“Just something I ordered.”
Nolan signed so quickly.
“Looks expensive.”
Nolan avoided my eyes. “It’s complicated.”
“Well? Aren’t you opening it?”
He placed the box on the living room table.
His hands trembled with excitement.
“Yeah. Of course.”
Just something I ordered.
He reached for the packing tape.
Then the doorbell rang again.
I clapped my hands. “Oh! There’s another surprise for you! Open the door!”
Nolan frowned. “Another?”
“Go see!”
His hands trembled with excitement.
He opened the door.
Linda stood outside carrying a small handbag. “Surprise, sweetheart! Didn’t expect your mother?”
“Mom?”
She kissed his cheek. “Sarah invited me to dinner!”
Nolan looked between us. “She did?”
There’s another surprise for you!
“Of course,” I said. “It’s a family occasion.”
“What occasion?”
“Open your present and find out.”
Nolan looked at his mother and me as though we were the ones hiding something.
He slowly returned to the box. “What’s going on?”
It’s a family occasion.
“Nothing,” Linda said brightly. “Open it!”
He peeled away the tape.
Lifted the flaps.
Pulled out the protective wrapping.
Then stopped.
Open it!
Inside was an ancient, scratched laptop.
Linda’s old laptop.
A handwritten note was taped to its lid.
“$12,000 WILL GO TO SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY DESERVES IT.”
Nolan stared. “What the hell?”
Inside was an ancient, scratched laptop.
Linda clapped delightedly. “Do you like it?”
“Mom?”
“I’ve wanted to get rid of that thing for years!”
“Where’s my computer?”
I tilted my head. “What computer?”
“My…”
$12,000 WILL GO TO SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY DESERVES IT.
Linda leaned forward. “You’re wonderful with technology, sweetheart. I’m sure you can fix mine.”
Nolan turned toward me.
“Sarah. Explain.”
“Gladly.” I sat on the couch. “Remember the twelve thousand dollars we supposedly sent your mother?”
He went pale. “Sarah…”
I’ve wanted to get rid of that thing for years!
“Funny thing. She never received it.”
“That’s not…”
“And remember how you said her house needed repairs?”
Linda folded her arms. “My house is perfectly fine.”
Nolan swallowed.
She never received it.
I continued. “Then I found your computer order.”
“You went through my account?”
“Our shared shopping account.”
“That’s private!”
“Apparently, so was our marriage.”
My house is perfectly fine.
“Where’s my computer?”
“Canceled.”
He stared at me. “You WHAT?”
“I contacted customer support before it shipped. They canceled the order, and I deleted the confirmation email from our shared inbox.”
“And the money?”
Our shared shopping account.
“All twelve thousand went back into our joint account.”
“How did I not notice?”
“When was the last time you checked our balance?”
He looked away. “So you planned all this behind my back?”
“Funny. That’s exactly what you did for six months.”
“You had no right!”
They canceled the order.
“I had every right to question a twelve-thousand-dollar purchase funded by six months of lies.”
Linda nodded. “And I arranged for my old laptop to arrive instead.”
Nolan looked horrified. “You both planned this?”
“Surprise!” Linda announced.
Nolan was already furious about his canceled computer. And he hadn’t even heard the biggest surprise yet.
That’s exactly what you did for six months.
“I work hard!” Nolan shouted.
“So do I.”
“That computer could’ve helped me earn more! Freelance projects, better opportunities…”
“Have you even applied for a freelance project?”
He hesitated. “Not yet.”
He hadn’t even heard the biggest surprise yet.
“So you spent twelve thousand dollars we didn’t have on a career you haven’t started?”
“I was going to!”
“You were also going to tell me the truth. Funny how neither happened.”
“I can explain everything!”
I stood. “Then explain why it was more important than my teeth.”
That computer could’ve helped me earn more!
He went silent.
“Explain why I canceled our vacation.”
“Sarah…”
“Explain why you told me buying coffee was irresponsible while you saved thousands for yourself.”
“I was going to tell you.”
You were also going to tell me the truth.
“When? After delivery?”
He looked away.
Linda shook her head. “I’m ashamed of you.”
“Mom, stay out of this.”
“You dragged me into it when you invented my financial problems!”
I’m ashamed of you.
Nolan rubbed his forehead. “Okay. I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?” I repeated.
“Fine! I lied. But I needed that computer.”
“You wanted it.”
“It’s different!”
You dragged me into it.
“No. It isn’t.”
He tried smiling. “Come on, Sarah. It’s kind of funny, right?”
Usually, that was when I’d laugh nervously.
This time, I didn’t.
“You spent six months lying to me so you could buy yourself a toy. Now let me show you what we’re actually doing with that money.”
I lied. But I needed that computer.
Nolan looked uneasy. “What do you mean?”
“Seven thousand stays in savings.”
“Okay.”
“Two thousand goes toward my dental treatment.”
He exhaled. “That’s reasonable.”
What we’re actually doing with that money.
I exchanged a glance with Linda.
“And the remaining three thousand?”
“Your mother and I are going to the Maldives.”
Silence.
Then Nolan laughed. “Good one.”
Seven thousand stays in savings.
Linda reached into her handbag.
She placed our booking confirmation on the table.
“Two travelers,” she said proudly. “Sarah and Linda.”
“You’re serious?”
“Very.”
Your mother and I are going to the Maldives.
“Without me?”
“That’s generally what two travelers mean.”
“You’re spending MY money on a vacation?”
I crossed my arms. “Most of that money came from my salary.”
“We’re married!”
Two travelers.
“Exactly. Which is why lying about our finances was such a problem.”
“This is ridiculous!”
Linda patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. You’ll have my laptop to keep you company.”
“Mom!”
“What? It’s perfectly usable.”
Most of that money came from my salary.
“It barely turns on!”
“Then consider it a professional challenge.”
I picked up the booking confirmation. “There’s something else.”
Nolan groaned. “What now?”
“Separate personal accounts. Shared household expenses. Any major joint purchase requires both our approval.”
You’ll have my laptop to keep you company.
“You’re changing everything?”
“Yes.”
“Over one computer?”
“No, Nolan. Over six months of dishonesty.”
For once, he had nothing clever to say.
It a professional challenge.
Weeks later, my dental treatment was done.
“I know selling my gadgets doesn’t fix everything,” Nolan said.
“No. It doesn’t.”
“What do you need from me?”
“Honesty. And time.”
He had nothing clever to say.
He nodded.
I wasn’t ready to forgive him. But I was done sacrificing myself.
In the Maldives, Linda and I watched the sunset.
“Missing Nolan?” she teased.
“Not particularly.”
I was done sacrificing myself.
My phone buzzed.
Nolan: Fixed Mom’s laptop. What’s the password?
Linda grinned and typed.
Linda: Try $12,000. Apparently, that’s your favorite number.
I nearly spilled my drink laughing.
Not particularly.
“Think he’ll be upset?” Linda asked.
“Probably.”
“Does that bother you?”
“Not anymore.”
For once, I was laughing because I was happy – not because I wanted to keep Nolan happy.
