I stood there looking with contempt at this stubborn rich man, even though just a few days ago I hadn’t known he existed.

Every Friday, Ellie and I go to Walmart. Milk, bread, whatever’s on sale.
I’m seventy. Ellie is my seven-year-old granddaughter, and I’m raising her alone.

That Friday, I stood in the juice aisle holding a carton of orange juice. Six dollars.

We started toward customer service.

Then a woman burst through the front doors.

“Please! Has anyone turned in a diamond ring? I was here twenty minutes ago!”
Ellie ran straight to her.
“Ma’am, is this yours?”

The woman froze, then dropped to her knees, clutching the ring.
“Thank you. Oh my God, thank you.”
She looked up at Ellie and studied her face, stunned, like she was seeing a ghost.
“Was it your wedding ring, dear?” I asked.
“No. It’s much more complicated. You really saved my life.”
Her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, went pale, and hurried outside.

We went home with our groceries. I thought that was the end of it.
I was wrong.
At 7:15 the next morning, someone pounded on my front door.
A black SUV sat at the curb. A tall man in a dark suit stood on my porch holding a large envelope.
I kept the chain on.

“Can I help you?”
“Are you the woman whose granddaughter found a diamond ring yesterday?”
“Who’s asking?”
“My name is Nate. Ma’am, we’ve been looking for you for years.”
“For me?”
“For you and your granddaughter.”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled a photograph from the envelope and slid it through the gap in the door.
I almost refused to take it. But then I noticed the ring.
A smiling woman stood beside a teenage girl, her arm wrapped around the girl’s shoulders. On her finger was the same enormous diamond ring Ellie had found at Walmart.
I looked closer at the girl.
He didn’t answer.
The smile. The dark hair. Those familiar eyes.
My hands went cold.
It was Claire. My daughter-in-law. Ellie’s mother.
I’d known her since she was twenty, but I’d never seen a picture of her as a teenager.
Claire and my son Daniel had died in a car accident three years ago. Ellie was only four.
For a moment, all I could do was stare at that photograph. I hadn’t expected to see Claire’s face on a stranger’s doorstep, much less beside a woman wearing that ring.

“That’s our mother, Eleanor. And that’s my sister Claire.”

“It was our mother’s. Mom wanted Claire’s first child to have it.”
“Then why didn’t Claire’s child get it?”
It was Claire, my daughter-in-law.
“Dad wouldn’t give it up. He cut Claire off nine years ago.”
This whole story seemed unreal to me.
“And Meredith?”
“She took it from his nightstand two days ago. She was bringing it to you.”
“She stole it.”
“Yes.”
“Why not ask him?”

“He’d never agree. He won’t even say Claire’s name.”
“And she lost it in a candy aisle.”
“She can explain that.”
“How did you find us?”
“We’d been trying to find Claire for years. Three months ago, an investigator found a guardianship record naming you and Ellie. That’s when we learned she’d died.”
This whole story seemed unreal to me.
“You didn’t know your sister was dead?”
“No.” His voice cracked. “We should’ve tried harder.”

“I know. We sent two letters through a law firm.”
I thought of my kitchen drawer full of unopened envelopes.

“My father is dying. The doctors give him weeks.”

In reality, I didn’t care.
“Meredith and I want Ellie to meet him before he goes.”

“He says he doesn’t want to.”

“He’s stubborn. Proud. He’s carried something for years, and he won’t tell us what. We think he wants her, but he can’t forgive himself.”
“So you’re doing this behind his back.”
“Then why did you come?”
“Yes. And she’s our niece. We want to know her, too.”
“You let the time slip away.”
“I know. We should’ve stood up to Dad. We didn’t.”
“Why bring a little girl to a man who doesn’t want her?”
“Because soon it’ll be too late for them to meet.”
I crossed my arms.
“Are you trying to take her?”
“You let the time slip away.”
“What? No.”
“Rich family. Lawyers. And me with a leaking roof.”
“Nobody’s taking anyone. I swear.”
“Swearing is cheap.”
He took a velvet pouch from his coat.
“Meredith gave me this. It’s Ellie’s.”

“Then hold it for her. Please.”
He walked back to the SUV.
I locked the door and sat at the kitchen table. The pouch lay in front of me.

I couldn’t bring myself to answer.
I kissed her hair and looked at the pouch.
Could I keep her from her grandfather, with only weeks left? But what if he broke her heart?
Back then, I didn’t yet know that he would break mine, too.

I decided to meet him first. Alone.
My phone buzzed. Unknown number.
“Hi, this is Meredith. We met at Walmart yesterday.”
“What do you want?”
“Please don’t judge us by what Nate told you.”
“Was he lying?”

“Not exactly. But he doesn’t know everything.”
“Then tell me.”
“I’d rather do it in person. I’m at St. Luke’s cafeteria.”

“You shouldn’t. Not yet. But there’s something about Claire and your son you deserve to know.”

I left Ellie with my neighbor Pat and drove to St. Luke’s.
Meredith sat in the corner with a coffee she hadn’t touched.

A thin, gray old man lay in the hospital bed with an oxygen tube under his nose.
He looked at me once. Then he knew.
“You’re Daniel’s mother.”

“My children had no right to send you. Get out. You’ll get nothing from me.”

“I knew where you lived.”

“I drove past your house three times.”

“I saw the roof. A little girl in a coat too small for her.”
I stared at him.
“I’d sit in the car and think, what do I say? ‘I’m the man who didn’t open the door’?”
“You say, ‘I’m her grandfather.’”
“I couldn’t.”
“Then why send your driver after Meredith?”
‘I’m her grandfather.’
“I knew she’d bring the ring to you. I was afraid you’d look at me like I killed them.”
“You didn’t,” I said. “You just left them standing on your porch.”
He flinched.
“For three years, you let Ellie think nobody else wanted her.”
“I wanted her. I just didn’t know how.”
“You never tried.”

Silence.
“Nate says you don’t want to meet her.”
“I told them that.”

“No.” His voice broke. “Please. I don’t have much time. Let me see her.”
I wanted to say no.

Then I thought of Ellie’s drawing. Her wish for a bigger family.
“I’m not forgiving you.”
“I’m not asking.”
“I’ll bring her tomorrow. For her, not for you.”
The next day, I brought Ellie to St. Luke’s.
In the elevator, I explained.

“Mama had a daddy. He’s very sick. He wants to meet you.”
“Is he nice?”
“He’s very sad.”
“Is he sad because he lost somebody?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Meredith and Nate waited outside room 412.
“Is he nice?”
Ellie stopped at the foot of the bed.
“Hi.”
Richard couldn’t speak. He cried without a sound.
After a while, Richard picked up the velvet pouch.
“This was your great-grandmother’s ring. It’s yours.”
“The treasure,” Ellie whispered.
He cried without a sound.
“Yes.”
“It stays safe until she’s older,” I said.
“Of course.”
Richard handed me an envelope.
“I’ve arranged a trust fund for Ellie’s education. It’s Claire’s share of her mother’s money. I should’ve done it years ago.”
“The treasure.”
I looked at him.
“I still don’t understand you.”
“I know.”
“But I’ll bring Ellie on Sundays. For her sake.”
He nodded, his eyes filling.
That night, Ellie held the ring box up to the lamp.
“I still don’t understand you.”
“Grandma, was the treasure from Mama?”
“In a way, sweetheart.”
She smiled.
“I think she wanted me to find it.”
We’ve been back to see Richard every Sunday since. And her aunt and uncle.
Ellie finally has more family in her life.
