I know this because I followed her.
Not to comfort her. I had tried that the year before and she had held one hand up while pressing the other to her sternum and said she was fine and would I please go back to the table, which I
had done, because telling someone who is crying that they are not fine is a form of rudeness that even grief manuals do not recommend.
I followed her the last Christmas to understand something I had been trying to understand for years, which was what was actually happening inside the house where I had grown up, beneath the performance that had been our family’s primary gift to itself.
What was happening, as far as I could determine from pantry surveillance, was that my mother was exhausted in the specific way of someone who has been managing a public story about
their family for decades and has begun, in private moments, to feel the distance between the story and the truth.
My name is Caroline Marsh. I am forty-six years old. My parents are Eleanor and Thomas Marsh, married for fifty-one years, retired in the house where I grew up in Connecticut, nominally the center of a family gathering that has required, for as long as I can remember, a specific amount of effort to make look like what it was supposed to be.
What it was supposed to be was a close, warm, thriving family.
What it was, more accurately, was four adult children with significant differences in how they were getting along, gathered annually in a house where those differences were not discussed,
in the presence of parents who believed that the gathering itself was evidence of the closeness they had built.
The gathering was real. The closeness was constructed. This is not a criticism of my parents. It is simply a description of what happens in some families where connection is performed rather than built, where showing up is treated as equivalent to being present, and where the gap between those two things is filled by my mother standing at a counter arranging crackers on a board with the focused attention of someone defusing a device.
My siblings were Grace, thirty-two, unmarried, working in publishing in New York, increasingly absent from family events in the years following an argument with my brother that had never
been fully resolved. My brother James, forty-four, married to a woman named Simone who had been made to feel unwelcome at the first Christmas she attended and had managed her own
absence from subsequent Christmases by developing a reliable series of scheduling conflicts. And my youngest sibling Nate, thirty-eight, who had moved to Portland seven years ago and
who called our parents every week and came home less often and who had told me once, over the phone, that the family felt like a thing he loved from a distance because proximity required a kind of pretending he was no longer willing to do.
This was the family I was part of.
Not a broken family. A performing family, which is a different thing. We performed at Christmas and at Thanksgiving and at my parents’ anniversary parties, and we performed well, and my
parents seemed genuinely nourished by the performances, and the question I had been sitting with for several years was whether the performances were a kindness to them or a disservice.
The question arrived with particular force the Christmas my mother cried in the pantry twice.
I drove home from Connecticut that year and called my therapist on the second day of January and described what I had witnessed, and she asked me what I had felt watching my mother cry.
I said I had felt helpless.
She asked why.
Because there’s nothing I can do about it, I said. The crying is about a family dynamic that has been in place for twenty years and no one is willing to address directly.
She said: what would you need to do to feel less helpless?
I said: actually address it.
She said: what’s stopping you?
I sat with this for a while.
Fear, I said eventually. Fear that naming it will make it worse. That it’s easier for everyone if things stay as they are.
She said: easier for whom?
I drove back to Connecticut three weeks later.
Not for a family event. On a Wednesday, in January, alone, just to sit with my parents at their kitchen table and have a real conversation with them.
My mother was surprised. My father was pleased in the simple way he was always pleased when one of his children appeared at the door, which was one of the things I loved about him most.
We had lunch.
Afterward, when my mother was about to suggest we move to the living room for coffee, I said: “Can we stay here for a minute? There’s something I want to talk to you about.”
They looked at each other with the communication of a couple who have been together long enough that entire sentences pass between them in a glance.
“Of course,” my mother said.
I had thought carefully about how to begin this. Not about what to say in full, because I knew from experience that scripted difficult conversations tend to go sideways when the other person does not follow the script. But about where to enter.
I entered at the truth, which was the only entrance that felt honest.
“I’ve been worried about you,” I said to my mother. “Specifically about Christmas. I’ve been watching you work very hard for several years to make those gatherings feel like something they don’t entirely feel like, and I can see what it costs you.”
She looked at me.
“I’m fine,” she said.
“Mom,” I said. “I followed you to the pantry.”
A silence.
“Both times,” I said.
My father looked at my mother. Something passed between them that I had not seen before, which was the look of a person who has known something and is watching it be named.
“I knew she was upset,” he said quietly. “I didn’t know what to do.”
“I’m fine,” my mother said again, but with less conviction.
“Eleanor,” my father said.
She looked at the table.
“I wanted everyone to have a good Christmas,” she said.
“We did have a good Christmas,” my father said.
“James and Simone haven’t really come in three years,” my mother said. “Grace barely speaks to James. Nate is always somewhere else in the room when the others are in it. And I watch all of this and I don’t know how to fix it.”
“You can’t fix it,” I said. “That’s what I want to talk to you about.”
She looked at me.
“I can’t fix it,” she said.
“Not alone,” I said. “Not by making perfect crackers and composing yourself in the pantry. Not by creating an occasion that looks beautiful enough to make everyone feel like the family they are in the photographs.”
My father made a small sound.
“Thomas,” my mother said.
“She’s right,” he said.
“I know she’s right,” my mother said, and her voice broke slightly on the word right, in the specific way of a person who has been right in private and is now hearing the private thing said in a room.
We sat in the kitchen.
“Tell me what’s actually happening,” I said. “With James and Grace. I know there was an argument. I don’t know what it was about.”
They looked at each other again.
“We don’t know either,” my father said. “Not fully. They told us different versions.”
“What do you know?”
What they knew, told in the careful way of parents who are trying to be fair to both children, was this: James had said something at a family event about Grace’s career choices that had landed badly. Grace had responded in kind. The exchange had escalated and then stopped in the way that family exchanges stop, abruptly and publicly, with the decision made by some invisible committee that the fight should end now and be addressed never.
This had been four years ago.
Neither James nor Grace had addressed it.
My parents had been hoping it would resolve on its own.
“It won’t resolve on its own,” I said.
“We can’t force them to talk to each other,” my mother said.
“No,” I said. “But you can stop pretending it’s not happening. And you can tell them that it’s affecting you.”
“We don’t want to take sides,” my father said.
“You don’t have to take sides,” I said. “You can simply say: this rift between you is causing us pain, and we would like it to be addressed, not for our sake but because we believe you both deserve a relationship that isn’t defined by a fight that happened four years ago and was never resolved.”
My mother looked at me.
“Have you spoken to them?” she said.
“I want to talk to you first,” I said. “Because what I’m going to say to them has to be consistent with what you’re willing to do.”
“What does that mean?” my father said.
“It means,” I said, “that if I go to James and Grace and say the family wants this resolved, and then Christmas happens and everyone performs the usual performance and the resolution never comes up and nothing changes, I’ve made things worse. What I say to them has to be backed by something real from you.”
“What do you want us to do?” my mother said.
“I want you to stop making the gathering comfortable enough to avoid the discomfort,” I said. “I want you to have a conversation with James and Grace, separately, in which you tell them
honestly that the situation is hurting you. Not in a guilt-inducing way. Just honestly. And I want you to tell them that you would like them to make a real effort to address it.”
“What if they won’t?” my father said.
“Then you have been honest about what you need,” I said. “And you’ve given them the information they need to make their own choice. Whether they use it is their decision.”
My mother looked at the kitchen counter, at the window, at her hands.
“We’ve been avoiding this for a long time,” she said.
“Yes,” I said.
“Because we thought it was protecting them,” she said.
“I know,” I said.
“Was it?” she said.
I thought about Grace arriving at Christmas events with the careful posture of someone managing proximity to a person she was in conflict with. I thought about James and Simone
finding polite reasons not to attend. I thought about Nate across the room, present but not engaged, performing family membership from a distance.
“It was protecting the surface,” I said. “Which is different.”
My father stood up. I had not expected this. He walked to the window and looked at the January backyard, the bare trees and the old bird feeder he never remembered to fill.
“We should have done this years ago,” he said.
“Thomas,” my mother said.
“We should have,” he said. “We saw it happening and we kept making nice Christmases and hoping the nice Christmases would be enough and they weren’t enough because nice Christmases can’t repair something that needs to be repaired directly.”
He turned around.
“Tell us what to do,” he said. “Specifically.”
I told them.
I told them what I thought they should say to James and to Grace, the honest version that did not assign blame or take sides but communicated clearly that the situation was affecting their family and that they needed it addressed. I told them what I was going to say to Simone,
separately, because I had my own relationship with Simone and I thought there was a conversation possible there that had not been had.
I told them about Nate, about the conversation he and I had had, about the distance he maintained not because he was indifferent but because presence had become too costly.
My mother did not cry in the pantry.
She cried at the kitchen table, which was different. Crying at the table meant she had stopped managing the cry. That it had arrived before she could arrange herself to absorb it privately.
My father moved his chair beside hers and put his arm around her.
They sat like that for a while.
“I thought I was keeping the family together,” she said.
“You were keeping the image together,” I said. “The family needed something different.”
“What?” she said.
“Permission to be difficult,” I said. “Permission to have the conflicts that exist and to address them rather than to arrange crackers over them.”
She almost laughed.
“Crackers,” she said.
“The crackers were beautiful,” I said.
“The crackers were displacement,” she said.
“Yes,” I said. “They were.”
Over the following weeks I had four separate conversations.
The first was with James.
He was cautious when I called. We were not estranged but we were not close, and the caution of a person who is accustomed to family conversations being either trivial or treacherous was in his voice before I had said anything.
I told him that our parents had asked me to have an honest conversation with him. That the situation with Grace had been causing them pain for four years. That I was not calling to
adjudicate or to tell him he was wrong, but to tell him that the family needed the wound to be addressed and that I believed he and Grace were capable of addressing it.
He was quiet.
Then he said: “She was very cutting.”
“I know,” I said. “Tell me what she said.”
He told me. I will not reproduce it here because it belongs to him and to her, but it was specific and it was harsh and it had been said in front of people, which added a layer of public humiliation to the private wound, and I understood, hearing it, why he had been unable to simply move past it.
“Have you told her how much it affected you?” I said.
“No,” he said.
“Why?”
“Because by the time I knew how much it affected me, we weren’t speaking,” he said.
“Would you be willing to tell her now?” I said.
A long pause.
“If she were willing to hear it,” he said.
“Let me talk to her,” I said.
The second conversation was with Grace.
Grace was defensive in a way that told me she had been waiting for someone to hold her accountable and had prepared her defense in advance. I let her deploy it. I did not interrupt. I
listened to her version of the fight, which was different from James’s version in the specifics and similar in the structure: she had said something she meant, he had escalated, things had been said that could not be unsaid.
“What do you want from this?” I said. “If you could design the outcome.”
She was quiet.
“I want him to understand why what he said made me feel the way it did,” she said. “Before that night.”
“Before the thing he said at the event?” I said.
“He has a pattern,” she said. “Of diminishing my choices. The event was the latest in a long pattern.”
“Have you ever told him about the pattern?” I said.
“I exploded at him about the pattern,” she said.
“Which is different from telling him,” I said.
She was quiet.
“Yes,” she said.
“Would you be willing to tell him now?” I said. “Not about the fight. About the pattern. About what has been happening for a long time that the fight was a version of.”
“Is he willing to listen?” she said.
“Let me talk to him first,” I said.
The third conversation was with Simone.
This was the one I had been most uncertain about, because my relationship with Simone was thinner than my relationships with my siblings. She had come into the family with warmth and had encountered something cold, and had managed that encounter by protecting herself, which was exactly what I would have done.
I called her directly and told her I wanted to apologize.
She was startled.
I told her that I had watched the first Christmas she attended and had seen what happened and had not said anything to anyone at the time, and that my silence had been a form of complicity in something that was unkind to her.
She was quiet for a long time.
“I didn’t expect that,” she said.
“I should have said it sooner,” I said. “I was conflict-averse in a way that was more about my own comfort than your experience.”
“What happened at that Christmas,” she said, carefully, “was not nothing.”
“No,” I said. “It wasn’t.”
“Your mother was not warm to me,” she said.
“No,” I said. “She wasn’t. And I believe she regrets it, though I’m not certain she has fully understood why it was hurtful. She was afraid of losing James and she expressed that fear in a way that landed on you.”
“She was afraid of losing James to me,” Simone said.
“Yes,” I said.
“Which was unkind,” she said.
“Yes,” I said.
“I would like her to know that,” Simone said.
“I think you should tell her,” I said.
Another silence.
“She won’t receive it well,” Simone said.
“She might surprise you,” I said. “She has been doing some surprising things this January.”
I told Simone about the kitchen conversation and my mother crying at the table and my father saying they should have done this years ago.
Simone was quiet.
“She actually cried?” she said.
“At the table,” I said. “Not in the pantry.”
“Why does that distinction matter?” Simone said.
“The pantry version was managed,” I said. “The table version was real.”
A pause.
“James would want me to try,” she said.
“I know he would,” I said.
“You talked to him?” she said.
“Yes,” I said. “This conversation is part of a larger effort.”
She almost laughed. “You’re like a one-person family mediation service.”
“I have a therapist,” I said. “She was very clear that doing nothing was also a choice.”
“Smart woman,” Simone said.
The fourth conversation was with Nate.
Nate was the easiest and the hardest. Easiest because he was the sibling I was closest to and with whom honesty required the least scaffolding. Hardest because what I was asking him to do was to increase his engagement with a family he had been carefully managing from a distance, which required him to take on a cost he had deliberately reduced.
I told him everything. The pantry conversation, the kitchen conversation, what James had told me, what Grace had told me, Simone’s response.
He listened to all of it.
“You’ve been busy,” he said.
“January,” I said.
“What do you need from me?” he said.
“I need you to come home,” I said. “Not to a Christmas performance. To a different kind of gathering. Something smaller. Something where there’s enough space for the conversations that need to happen.”
“Will Mom be arranging crackers?” he said.
“I’m going to ask her not to,” I said.
He was quiet.
“She can arrange some crackers,” he said. “Just not as a coping mechanism.”
“I’ll communicate that distinction,” I said.
He laughed. Then: “Okay. I’ll come.”
In April, my parents had a small gathering.
Not a holiday. Not a birthday. Just a weekend, five adults and two partners, in the house where we had grown up, with enough food that no one was managing anything and enough space that people could talk to each other without performing for an audience.
My mother made crackers. I let her. She also sat down before the food was ready and stayed sitting, which was different.
James and Grace talked.
Not in the way I had hoped, all at once, with full resolution. In the way that actually happens, which was smaller and halting and genuine. Grace told him about the pattern. He listened with the specific look of someone receiving information about themselves that is uncomfortable and is also clearly true. He said he had not understood how consistent it had been. She said she believed him, which seemed to cost her something, because believing him required giving up some of the anger she had organized herself around.
They did not resolve everything that weekend. They made a start, which is what a weekend is capable of.
Simone and my mother talked on Saturday afternoon.
I do not know exactly what was said because I was not there. My mother found me afterward in the kitchen and said: “She was right that I was unkind.”
“Yes,” I said.
“I was afraid,” she said.
“I know,” I said.
“That’s not an excuse,” she said.
“No,” I said.
“But it’s what happened,” she said. “And I told her.”
“What did she say?” I said.
“She said she appreciated it,” my mother said. “And then she said she hoped we could start over.”
“What did you say?” I said.
“I said I would very much like that,” my mother said. And then, quietly: “She’s very good, you know. For James.”
“I know,” I said.
“I should have seen that earlier,” she said.
“You see it now,” I said.
Nate was there.
He was there not from the careful distance he usually maintained but from the actual one, present in conversations, sitting near people rather than across the room from them, telling a
story at dinner that made Grace laugh in the way she laughed before things got difficult.
My father watched all of this from his chair by the window with the expression he wore when he was satisfied in a way that did not require comment.
On Sunday morning, before anyone left, he made coffee for everyone, which he rarely did, and brought it to the table where we were all sitting in the comfortable way of people who have just shared two days of something honest.
He said: “I want to say something.”
We looked at him.
“Your mother and I have been making Christmases for a long time,” he said. “And I think we got confused about what we were making them for. We thought we were making them for you. I think we were actually making them for us. For the image of the family we wanted to have.”
No one spoke.
“This weekend was different,” he said. “It was less comfortable. It was also more real. And I want more of it.” He looked at my mother. “We want more of it.”
She put her hand over his.
“You’re welcome here,” he said. “Not for performances. For whatever is actually true.”
Simone looked at James.
Grace looked at Nate.
I looked at my coffee.
“I think,” Nate said, “that you just made me want to come home more.”
“Good,” my father said.
“That’s the goal,” my mother said.
“We should have said it years ago,” my father said.
“We’re saying it now,” my mother said.
He nodded.
“We’re saying it now,” he agreed.
I drove back to my apartment two hours later.
It was April, and the drive was the kind of drive that April sometimes offers in New England, where the light comes in at a low angle and everything is still bare but has a quality of something about to happen, the edge of green visible in the trees without the green having arrived.
I had called my therapist before the weekend to tell her what I had set in motion.
She had asked: “What’s the best outcome you’re hoping for?”
I said: something real. I had stopped hoping for the family in the photographs. I was hoping for the family that was actually there.
She said: that’s a significant shift.
I said: it took me forty-six years.
She said: some people don’t get there.
I thought about that on the drive home.
Some people do not get there. Some families perform indefinitely, and the performance is maintained by the collective decision not to examine it, and everyone inside it makes their peace with the distance between the performance and the truth.
My family had been heading in that direction.
It had taken my mother crying twice in the pantry, and me following her to understand what I was seeing, and a January drive to Connecticut, and four conversations that each required the specific courage of naming what had gone unsaid.
It had taken my parents sitting at a kitchen table and receiving information about their own family that they had been protecting themselves from, and choosing to receive it rather than to deflect it.
It had taken my father standing at the window saying we should have done this years ago.
None of it had been comfortable.
All of it had been worth it.
The April light held the road all the way home.
In my apartment, I made tea and sat at my kitchen table and thought about the weekend and what it had produced and what it had not produced and what was still available in the years ahead, now that we had decided to be honest with each other about what was actually there.
A family is not a photograph.
It is a set of people who share history and who make decisions, ongoing and renewable, about how much of themselves to bring to the shared space. Those decisions change. The people
change. The space can change too, if someone decides to clear the surface rather than arrange things on top of it.
My mother had arranged things on the surface for a long time.
She was learning to clear it.
So was I.
So were we all, in our various ways, at our various paces.
That was what family had always meant, I thought. Not the Christmas in the photograph but the April morning when we sat around a table with coffee my father had made and said things we had not said before.
